  • Shopping around for a new church? Well, look no further. Consider the Church of Stop Shopping. You can even join this one without having to give up your current church.

NEW YORK CITY - There's a church out there unlike any other, where worshipers repent for the sins of shopping and corporate control, where gospel hymns condemn the modern way of life that has become dominated by profits over people. Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir are a group based out of New York City that, "...believe consumerism is overwhelming our lives."

The church is active in a number of ways, from demonstrations in Starbucks all around the country to a presence at major anti-war rallies. The Reverend Billy appears on the surface to be a stereotypical Christian fundamentalist preacher but after a few minutes listening to his rhetoric it becomes clear that his church has a different message: Stop shopping! The sermons are often hilarious and always entertaining while spreading a message in a bold
    and thoughtful way.

In addition to an ongoing tour of universities, clubs, and old fashioned tent-revivals, the church offers on its website an electronic church bulletin, a confessional, and a blog of Billy's experiences as he travels the country spreading the good word. As the reverend says, "...we are singing and preaching for local economies and real experience."
