  • There are some things in tradition that aren't in the Bible. I know that some of the apostles who followed Our Lord were, however, known for or associated with various things or virtues...

Anyone care to enlighten us about the various things the apostles were known for or associated with, or patrons of? I'd love to learn more about these key figures in Church history! (Hopefully from truly Catholic, trustworthy sources, rather than shadier ones like wikipedia.)

For that matter, I don't think I'd ever heard how most of them died!

  • I think most of us probably know St. John was known as "the apostle Jesus loved." I guess one could say he also represented the human race at the foot of the Cross in the reception of Mary as our Mother, and her adoption of us as her children. I'm not sure what else he's known for/as.

Isn't the apostle St. Luke the patron of artists?

    I know so little

  • St. James the Less was called the Brother of the Lord (being His kinsman), and was the first Bishop of Jerusalem. His epistle covers the anointing of the sick.

I just read that St. John was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother to James the Greater. Apparently his gospel was written in Greek originally, and by the Greeks he was called "The Divine".

St. Luke was a physician by profession, but indeed was known as a skilled painter.

St. Matthew was a tax-gatherer originally, and was the first evangelist to write the gospel.

I just read those things in my Bible.

  • St. Matthew is the patron saint of accountants and tax preparers -- it's funny because my wife was an accountant (CPA) when we first met.

It would be like me falling in love with a woman named after the patron saint of computer programmers -- I suppose it happens sometimes, but it's neat when it does.

  • found this in attributes, still doing some digging on the lion thing, but:

"Lion in the desert; bishop on a throne decorated with lions; man helping Venetian sailors; man holding a book with "pax tibi Marce" written on it; man holding a palm and book; man with a book or scroll accompanied by a winged lion; man with a halter around his neck; man writing or holding his gospel; rescuing Christian slaves from Saracens."

    here : http://www.catholic-saints.net/saints/st-mark.php

found this "In Christian literature and art St. Mark is symbolically represented by a lion. The Latin and Greek Churches celebrate his feast on 25 April, but the Greek Church keeps also the feast of John Mark on 27 September.

The 4 Evangelists were given one of the attributes of the vision of Ezekiel according to the beginning of their rspective gospel.

This link seems to be very instructive:

There are also some interesting things in each Gospel, what authors call the "inner proofs of the fact that, for instance, St. Luck, was the author of the third Gospel", and for instance in the case of St. Luck he is the one (i`m quoting by heart, have to check my books yet) who talks about the blood of Our Lord at the Garden, and things related to medicine.

  • MyrnaM Our Lady of Perpetual Help

I'm sure correcting an error isn't the best way to go about posting for the first time, but the Black Madonna stored in Poland, painted by St Luke, is Our Lady of Czestochowa.  It is said she is black due to the candle residue of the multitudes devoted to Our Lady.

  • St.James the Greater is the patron saint of Spain and was the unofficial patron of Catholic samurai in Japan during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
