  • I don't remember on which forum I discussed July 4th (it was on a Friday this year), but I thought I would share what I heard today.  During his homily, Bishop Dolan mentioned that the abstinence from meat has been traditionally dispensed for the Friday after Thanksgiving.

I was glad to hear this because I was all set to abstain.  In my family, we celebrate Thanksgiving on Friday so certain members of the family can share Thanksgiving Day with their in-laws, girlfriends, etc.
For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect. (Matthew 24:24)

  • The question of the current viability of dispensations in force before the Crisis is a thorny one for Sedevacntists - I know because I've heard much debate among them about it. Since I am not an SV I will not presume to weigh in on that particular facet.

But as for myself, I would not dispense with the Friday abstinence for any secular holiday. And my advice for those celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday would be to enjoy their repast on Thursday, and wrap the leftovers up to be enjoyed again on Saturday. I would supplement this advice with a friendly reminder that access to high quality refrigeration is now all but ubiquitous - much more so than it was when these dispensations were first granted.

But Bishop Dolan is a sedevacantist, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say in the first paragraph.

I'm saying that not all Sedevacantists agree with him that a dispensation issued from before the Vacancy remains in force today (a perusal of the July 4 thread to which you referred will prove that).

But, not being SV myself, I will not weigh in on that debate.

Gotcha.  And I guess there was such a July 4 thread here.  I couldn't remember where I had discussed it.

Yes, I believe that thread was in the "anonymous" forum.

With all due respect, this rumor that is going around the Internet that the dispensation was granted because of lack of refrigeration is nonsense.  The dispensation was granted by Pius XII well after refrigeration was extremely common in the United States.

This dispensation was granted so that people could enjoy their meat from a secular holiday (with some religious undertones) two days in a row.  You can choose to abstain if you want to, but there is no harm in not abstaining--unless of course you presume to know better than Pius XII.

You were given verbal permission from a bishop.  Sedevacantist or not, it was passed to you by a prince of the Church.

Stop troubling yourself with over analyzing the particulars.

Pope Pius XII's dispensations, unless specifically revoked, are still valid.

I was not troubled.  I was happy to hear it from Bishop Dolan.  I was actually sharing this information for those who may not have known.

It is safe to say that we are all aware of the Friday after Thanksgiving dispensation.

Novus Ordites have been eating meat on Fridays since the early 70's.

So I'm the only one who didn't know? Just because I ate meat on Fridays as a Novus Ordite doesn't mean that I (or any given Catholic ) would know about the Friday after Thanksgiving post-conversion to Tradition.
