  • I thought TAN books was a traditional Catholic bookseller.  I was perusing their catalog and I see books about post VII popes and books authored by Novus Ordites.  Was I wrong?  What happened?

I believe that TAN books was started by a traditional Catholic, but it was bought by new owners who are not traditional Catholics and they have made changes.

Well, that would explain things.  Uggh.  So disappointing.

  • Try www.JoyfulCatholic.com.  They bought copyrights(books) catholic over a 100 years old and are printing them in paperback.  I am so thrilled over this.  A good number are from the Confraternity of the Precious Blood and Fr. Faber.  Very nice!

I don't think TAN ownership has ever been "traditional" in the sense of being SSPX, sede, etc.

The original owner of TAN attended (established ~1975) an independent chapel. Several employees attended there and/or the Institute of Christ the King. None of those people work for the present company.

  • The original owner of TAN Books was the namesake of the company, Thomas A. Nelson.  That man should be knighted.  He is responsible for nursing the faith of millions of English-speaking Catholics.  If I make it to heaven some day, it will be due in large part to the work of Mr. Nelson.  May God bless him abundantly.

His excellent taste in what Catholic books to reprint (his solid sense of the Catholic Faith) is why I learned so much before and during my seminary years.
Especially the "science of the saints" and forming a Catholic Sense in a message-up age such as the one we live in. My life will never be the same. The Catholicism and knowledge those books taught me is still with me, and will always be.

He should be knighted? I agree. But it's funny you should put it that way.

He is a knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem "Knights of Malta". It was under the auspices of that Order that he set up his Trad chapel in the mid 1970's.
