I read it when I was a kid and enjoyed it.  I don't remember anything inappropriate, but that was a long time ago.

It is absolutely wonderful for kids!  I just re-read it myself last year and can think of nothing inappropriate for kids.  He wrote it for his children.  If memory serves,  the story started as a series of bedtime stories for his kids and he later put it down in writing.
