  • You can now mine cryptocurrency in your browser, in the background, while you read, browse, post, etc. on CathInfo.

A few points I'd like to clear up right away:

    1. This is 100% OPT-IN. Everyone's account is set to "no" or do not donate by default.
    2. Some anti-virus programs get all paranoid and upset about this activity, just because some shady sites have used this particular means of monetizing their traffic. So you might have to whitelist CathInfo.com in your security software -- tell it to make an exception for CI.
    3. There is nothing "unsafe" about crunching numbers (solving math problems) in the background using your browser. It has nothing to do with privacy invasion, snooping, hacking, scamming, tricking, redirecting, or any of the other underhanded or destructive things real malware does to you.
    4. The cryptocurrency earned in this way (Monero or XMR for those of you interested) is given as a donation, but each person's contribution is kept separate. All donations are stored in buckets, sorted by CathInfo user name.
    5. To begin donating in this way, please follow the 4 steps at the bottom of this post.
    6. Please feel free to leave a browser window open somewhere on CathInfo.com, even when you're away from your machine.
    7. This works on mobile as well as desktop, on all operating systems. You must have Javascript enabled.
    8. The more powerful your machine, the more XMR is generated per minute.
    9. As long as you're logged in and browsing somewhere on the CathInfo.com site, you will be generating and donating XMR. You can do this on 1 machine, or 10 different machines (at different times, or all at once!)
    10. All the work is done by your CPU; it doesn't matter what kind of graphics card you have.

HOW TO BEGIN CREATING & DONATING CRYPTOCURRENCY:
(See the screenshots at the bottom of this post)

    1. Select "Account Settings" from the Profile menu.
    2. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the light blue section, and check the box next to "Support CathInfo?"
    3. Fill in your password in the box right below it (this is always required to make any changes to your Profile!)
    4. Click the button "Change profile" at the bottom of the light blue section, all the way to the right.

    You're all set!

You will notice that when you become a supporter/miner for CathInfo, the CathInfo logo will change:

    Thank you,

    Matthew

P.S. If you want don't want to leave your computer logged in to CathInfo (so kids and family members can mess with it), you can navigate to this page instead, which lets you donate "anonymously" without being logged in at all.

    https://www.cathinfo.com/four

I will probably come up with some other games, as well as more "business friendly" pages, to give you plenty of choices for the Anonymous mining option.

  • Did the Cathinfo logo change?

    Yes. Supporter.

CPU and GPU activities still now staying below 10%.

  • On a different computer (same model, same OS) it works. Logging in, CPU (not GPU) activity goes up to 95-100% and is identified as the browsers activity. I guess the difference is in browser's settings.

  • The difference indeed is browser settings: Options/Privacy & Security/Tracking Protection: With Tracking Protection on no mining is done. Probably because the software won't know the recipient of mining success.

Also: CPU activity does not stop immediately when logging out. I had to restart the browser.

A nice feature would be, to be able to limit the maximum used CPU power. The noise of the fan bothers.

It only starts mining if you're logged in (since it has to check to see if the checkbox is checked -- guests don't have a profile, so they can't check the box)
But once you log out, it doesn't necessarily stop. But if you close/reopen your browser, it won't be able to start again (because you won't be logged in)

As for adjusting the CPU %, I might add such a feature in the future.

I have no idea what you mean by "cryptocurrency mining."
For instance, does it consume RAM like ads do or like malware does?

Cryptocurrency mining mostly involves CPU resources. In layman's terms, it's doing intense mathematical calculations.

The processing done by a single computer functions as a "proof of work" as they call it. Kind of like credits you redeem once the pool strikes it rich.

Imagine that you are on a pirate ship, and every task you do (hoisting the main sail, swabbing the deck, loading a cannon) earns you a special proof-of-work ticket. Every time the pirate ship captures a ship with treasure, they divide it up evenly, X per ticket. So the more tickets you have, the more you get of the loot.

Lots of small chunks can be done by thousands of computers, all pooling their efforts. In fact, almost all cryptocurrency mining is done by "pools". When one of them gets lucky and "mines" a new block, the reward is divided up among all the computers who participated in the number crunching. This gives you a more steady, predictable payout per CPU.

Think of it like an office lottery pool on steroids.

Okay, that helps a little. But I still have to make a huge leap of faith in what you're saying.
    .
I know what  an "office lottery pool" is but I also know it has absolutely nothing to do with running continuous calculations.
    .
There can be a rudimentary set of arithmetic processed at the beginning and at the end, but nothing in the middle.
    .
What is it my computer's CPU would be doing "crunching numbers" to accomplish?
    .
    What numbers does it "crunch?"
    .
How does it know what to do with the numbers?
    .
What programs or applications are involved?
    .
What is the objective of the computations?
    .
How does it check to be sure the computations are being done correctly?
    .
What happens when an error creeps in and the output is wrong -- is there any consequence?
    .
    So many questions.
    .
    .--. .-.-.- ... .-.-.- ..-. --- .-. - .... . -.- .. -. --. -.. --- -- --..-- - .... . .--. --- .-- . .-. .- -. -.. -....- -....- .--- ..- ... - -.- .. -.. -.. .. -. --. .-.-.

  • Definitely needs a % limiter. I'm happy to support the site and I have a powerful PC to do it(i7 6700, 16gb RAM, GTX 1070) however it instantly jumps me up 100% my CPU starts to overheat so I can't let it run too long. Also it makes the PC lag badly at even doing the simplest of other tasks meaning I could only let it run while I'm not doing anything else - which means I'd be mining far less long-term than I would if I ran it at a lower percentage(since at 100% I might run it an hour or two, but at say 80% I could leave it in the background all day long).

Also good choice with Monero. It's definitely the most private of the big cryptocurrencies.

I configured the miner to only use 70% of your CPU now. So you shouldn't notice it's there any more -- it shouldn't interfere with your normal PC use.

NOTE: You will probably have to clear your browser's cache. The javascript for configuring the miner is found in the main "site Theme template" so if that's cached on your PC, it will use that "old, outdated" copy rather than grabbing the latest from my server. Long story short: Clear your cache.

I cleared my cache, and verified/tested that the miner's CPU usage has gone down.

  • I'm not sure about these cryptos, Matthew, especially when it comes to mining.  As a medium of exchange, I have no problem with it.  But this mining thing sounds a lot like theft.  For doing nothing you make "money" that you then give to others in exchange for goods and services.  Something sounds off morally about this ... similar to the condemnations of usury.  But feel free to disagree.  I don't know enough about this stuff to have too informed an opinion.  Or is "mining" akin to walking around on the streets looking for change that people might have dropped as they walked around?

Oh you don't have to worry about that at all. Right now, we use funny money ($USD) every day that's produced by the click of a button at the Fed -- there is no limit to how much can be created in a single day. The Fed can create trillions of dollars out of thin air, by waving their magic wand, and by doing so everyone who holds dollars is robbed, since the dollar becomes worth less goods and services! Inflation is theft.

The USD is even worse, since every dollar comes into being with an act of debt. If the United States could somehow pay off its national debt (spoiler alert: it can't, because such is physically impossible) there would be no money left. But more than that, when a USD is created there is interest attached. The money is created, but not the interest required to pay back the debt. So every year, the money supply has to go up by X%. Eventually, that curve becomes parabolic (straight up, vertical) and you have hyperinflation. It's a mathematical certainty. No question of if, but WHEN.

Cryptocurrency avoids this because A) it's decentralized, B) it's for the people, C) it only benefits the people, D) you can't just print or create them without effort (it takes a lot of resources to produce just one unit) so they are stable. E) There is a limit to how many will ever be produced, F) the production rate is always a steady trickle -- never a flood, G) even the miners don't make a killing, and their mining activity is actually providing a service at the same time -- verifying and securing all transactions that take place in that cryptocurrency.

Cryptocurrency is a game changer, and unlike anything the world has ever seen.

You should watch the 2 videos I posted, above. They answer and address a lot of your concerns.

As I mentioned above, many (most? all?) antivirus and other security software is going to give you a warning about any mining activity on any site you visit. You can whitelist CathInfo, since I'm not a shady site, and I'm doing it only with your permission (by opt-in).
There is no malware of any kind involved. Just a javascript file that mines Monero cryptocurrency, which I openly tell everyone about in the OP.

See my posts above -- you might want to clear your browser cache to get the latest configuration, which tones down the mining activity by 30%.
