  • The original Rheims translation of 1582 with the original annotations - very different from the common Challoner revision of the DR:

    The OT is also available.
Rom. 3:25 Whom God hath proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his justice, for the remission of former sins"

Apoc 17:17 For God hath given into their hearts to do that which pleaseth him: that they give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God be fulfilled.

    Thank you.

After reading the comments of those who purchased it, I understand that this is a must have Bible because it can be used as a reference when in doubt, as to the origin of our Book. I bought it.

However, please, advise me if this Bible is also easy to read as per language fluency, as I guess that it might be written in an old English, that may be difficult to read to my daughter as she grows up.

I may have to buy a second study Bible for my daughter and myself, one easier to read both in linguistic fluency and text size, yet still with great traditional commentary.

Thank you if you can share more time and help.

Thank you Mark79, I really appreciate your and this community's help. These links point to interesting and seemingly very well put together books. Thank you.

However, as I mentioned to the previous poster, I am looking for a Bible in book format. A single book, easy to read (font size and fluency of language).

Something to keep by my bed side as a study tool for myself first and, later on, as a teching tool for my daughter.

Hi. The text size will not be a problem. It is, however, old, with some archaic idioms and the old thee and thou, etc. These are easy to overcome with a little effort.
It's a good idea to have other versions as well, such as the Challoner Douay Rheims or the Confraternity edition, published in the 20th century. But this edition will be a foundational study bible for you and a go to Bible to refer to its annotations as you study God's word.
God bless and may the Holy Ghost assist you in your reading.

Thank you for the advice, DecemRationis,

Are this and this study versions?

Re the Rheims 1582 translation: the "Thee" and "Thou" will not be an insormountable challenge but archaic or old grammar will be.

Re the Challoner Douay Rheims version, is this still a study Bible? I need annotations that explain, in simple language (for myself but primarily for my young daughter) context and Catholic interpretation. Is this Bible suitable for this use?

Again, thank you for your help. May Holy Mary walk with you in life.

The typical Challoner DR has Bishop Challoner's notes in it; I can't say for sure that those do. The best study Bible using the Challoner revision is the Haydock, though the footnotes are in small type.

Thank you, DecemRationis, yes, I looked at the Haydock Bible... I do appreciate your kind help, thank you, but while the grammar does not seem too stern, the font size is challenging.

But, if nobody can recommend something with large font size and manageable grammar, I guess that i will have to settle for small font and hope that my daughter will not find the format too intimidating.

I remember when i was a child, the Bible had such a stern and non inviting appearence. Only later, when I attended catechism, I found a more inviting format. I guess that the content might not have been as proper and as correct.

Making traditional Cathlicism inviting is possible and I think that we should strive to maintain formality in liturgy and precepts while making catechism more inviting for our new generations as that is where the future of our Faith lies.

Again, thank you for your time and for sharing your expertise.

I read this and becaome interested but I cannot find this work in a single book format containing both the Old + the New Testament, of this true and original Rheims-Douay translation.

I have been looking for over a week but I am not sure that I found it. Can you point me in the right direction?

  • Hey. The original "DR" was printed separately at Rheims (the New Testament) in 1582 and then the Douay (the Old Testament) in 1610. The annotations in these, as in the Haydock, are extensive. I am not aware of the original Rheims and Douay being printed together in one volume by anyone; it would be HUGE.

Sorry I can't help you there.

I don't think you'll be able to get a good Catholic Study Bible and avoid small type.

The Jerusalem or New Jerusalem, study edition, I believe can be found in one volume. It's post-V2 so you have to be careful with it. But when it's good, it's very thorough and a great study Bible; you just have to realize that post-V2 source and some modern "scholarship" and use it for its value. But again, it can be a great study Bible. The footnotes - yet again - are a bit small though.

I'll try to take a pic of a page and attach it for you sometime soon.

    Dear DecemRationis,
Thanks to the time that you have invested I have decided to have more poweful glasses made and buy a small print version, if this is the only one that I can find, to avoid compromise.

My best choice seems the Haydock version and, perhaps, later on also a Dr. von Perters original translation. Dr von Peters too confirmed that the original DRB is enormous and it only comes in three volumes.

Back to the Haydock, I only found scanned or photocopied books:
    1.
    2.
    3.
Can you point me to a Haydock Bible (New and Old together) that is NOT photocopied or scanned?
