The Stations of the Cross remained the same for centuries and then along came "Saint" JP II and changed them significantly. See the difference below.

You really notice this if you go into some pre-1991 Catholic Churches and see the 14 traditional Station of the Cross images and then pick up one of the post 1991 modernized Station of the Cross booklets (usually left out during Lent). The booklet simply doesn't correspond to the images placed in the church. Now who is the master of confusion -- diabolical confusion that is?

Traditional Version
1. Jesus is condemned to death
2. Jesus carries his cross
3. Jesus falls the first time
4. Jesus meets his mother
5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross
6 Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
7.Jesus falls the second time
8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
9.. Jesus falls the third time
10. Jesus is stripped of his garments
11. Crucifixion: Jesus is nailed to the cross
12. Jesus dies on the cross
13. Jesus is taken down from the cross (Deposition or Lamentation)
14. Jesus is laid in the tomb.

[Modified (as of 1991) JP II Version

1. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
2. Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested
3. Jesus is condemned by the Sanhedrin
4. Jesus is denied by Peter
5. Jesus is judged by Pilate
6. Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns
7. Jesus takes up his cross
8. Jesus is helped by Simon of Cyrene to carry his cross
9. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
10. Jesus is crucified
11. Jesus promises his kingdom to the repentant thief
12.Jesus entrusts Mary and John to each other
13. Jesus dies on the cross

Fr. Phillipson of the Fatima Center mentioned recently in a talk on the Holy Rosary that the number "4" is considered by Gnostics to be more important than the number "3." "Fourness" is loved by astrologers and New Agers. The gnostic Carl Jung considered the number "4" to be the most important spiritual symbol of all time.

There are many reasons to believe that Our Lady wants us to pray three sets of mysteries and not four. The Rosary is "Our Lady's Psalter." There are 150 psalms. Three sets of mysteries includes 150 Ave Marias, and when you count the 3 said at the beginning of the Rosary, you get 153, which is the exact number of fish St. Peter caught after Our Lord's Resurrection (St. John 21:11).
