  • What I do not understand is why anyone, man or woman, would want to WATCH others play a game.

I understand watching your husband or kids play ball, but what enjoyment is there in watching strangers on tv play games?  You don't them, why do you care what they do?

I mean no offense, I genuinely do not understand spectator sports.

  • Entertainment? I don't watch sports but I assume that's the reason. If I have time I hunt or fish.

  • The reason I watch the occasional soccer match is that having played it as a teen I have an attachment to it, and I enjoy seeing it played skillfully by well-trained athletes, like I enjoy watching anything done skillfully. I don't think that's outlandish or difficult to understand, though women may not relate to it as much as men.

What I find difficult to understand is the fixation on pro sports to the point of some men watching hours a week, paying princely sums to see live games, knowing all the statistics, and having little else to talk about.

Replacement religion.  Find what someone spends most of their free-time doing, you'll find what their religion is.  For a lot of men it's sports.  Think of stat books and websites as a sports Denzinger.  The money spent on tickets, pay per view or special cable packages as the gas money to get to a Latin mass a hundred or more miles away.

"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • In my part of the world, support for professional sports teams forms an integral part of the identity of many people. Complete strangers share a common bond through this. For me it was an emotional attachment originally induced at a young age. The Sisters of my grammar school even had us offer prayers for success of the local baseball team. It didn't work out too well then - however, prayers were finally answered in 2004, 2007, and 2013.

Thank-you for the excellent topic which found a home for my first post ever at cathinfo!
