Sorry for the CathInfo outage - my ISPs fault

  • CathInfo is down for some, because my Internet provider decided to give me a new Internet address, just for the fun of it! Just one problem: www.cathinfo.com points to a CERTAIN IP ADDRESS and when my IP address changes, the domain name no longer points to my server -- to the website we all know and love.

TO FIX THIS PROBLEM FOR NOW
Edit your HOSTS file. The directions vary by Operating System, so I can't give you exact directions. For specifics, please google, "update my hosts file <name of operating system>"

Add this line to your HOSTS file:
    216.82.133.188   www.cathinfo.com

My server was configured to live at address 64.250.9.27.
But all the sudden, my server was "transported" to a new location in the Internet-sphere, namely 216.82.133.188. So my server was confused, and all the traffic showing up at 64.250.9.27 was disappointed to learn that there was no CathInfo server waiting there.

When this happens, I have to tell my server the new deal ("You see, we now live at 216.82.133.188 now...") and then we have to wait for all the Internet servers to update their cache to the new location. This can take up to 1 day.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I will give my ISP hell on Monday morning about this, don't worry. I'm paying extra for a "Static IP address" which is an IP address which DOESN'T CHANGE.
    Want to say "thank you"?

Well it certainly looks to me as though the leprechauns are getting even since you forgot to activate their favorite color template so far this time of year.
    .
Not that leprechauns mind too much when you make them look like cowboys ...  :cowboy: after all, they're aware you're a Texan.

  • That's weird, because I couldn't log in this evening without using a vpn.  I never had to do that before.
