And a thank you. With this forum topic I realize I have two handheld ham radios, Baofengs, never used... which is good because I was not told these require a license to transmit. Yikes. Guess I will pass them on to others who may want them. I have no use for them now.
Oh, yes, absolutely. Using a ham radio without a license is deeply frowned upon by other hams, not to mention the FCC. You have to give your call sign, and if you make one up (not suggesting you would, perhaps I should say "if
one makes one up"), it will be found out in very short order. They follow certain patterns depending upon the type of license.
Just take the No-Code Technician test. It's not that hard. You get your call letters, and a license for life, as long as you renew it every ten years. Radio Shack used to sell excellent study guides, I'm sure there are now online equivalents of those.
