  • What has become of the Society of the Virgin Mary, and St Basil Chapel in Beckley, West Virginia, since Bishop Taylor died last year?  My son and I stayed in Beckley a few weeks ago passing through WV on vacation and we drove by the chapel.  It had a "for sale" sign on it.  Does the traditionalist community still exist in Beckley, and if so, who serves it?  I have to think whatever community might exist would have to be very small; Beckley is a small town (less than 20K population) and the nearest city of any size is Charleston, 50 miles to the north.  The mainline diocesan parish church in Beckley is very explicit in their telephone directory ad that they are affiliated with the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston --- that's unusual --- evidently to point out that they are diocesan, whereas St Basil's across town is not.  I had never visited St Basil's but had hoped to one day.

  • The superior of the Society, Bp. Patrick Taylor, passed away in November of last year.

    The chapel is now closed.
