  • Our priest had given info about a trip to Rome and Pompeii.  The very next day my application was in for my passport.  We now have 19 people after the airlines offering a 1 week extention.  The only time I've really been out of the country was for deployment.

  • Trace,
I hope you have a great time!  Been to both places many times.

Are you going on a tour, or with a Trad group?

    My favorite churches in Rome:
    Vatican

Scalla Santa- the Holy Staircase where Christ went to Pliate.  Actual drops of Christ's blood on the steps

Church of St Praxedes: across for St Mary Major- contains the Sacred Column where Christ was scourged

Santa Croche- Basilica of the Holy Cross.  Contains  large reliquery of the true cross, the nails, part of the crib, and the crossbeam from St Dismas cross

Church of the Redemtori contains the picture of OL of Perpetual Help pained by Saint Luke

    Catacombs of St Sebastian

    St Mary Mary Major

    San Giovanni in Laterno

Church of the Quo Vadis:  Contains a foorprint in stone that Christ left coming into Rome where he met St Peter leaving Rome
Church is near the catacombs of St SebastianThere are too many churches to mention.  These are some of my favorites

Watch your wallet.  The gypsies are very aggressive, and will pick pocket you

Sorry about all this crazy underlining.  I only meant to underline the names of the churches! Hopefully I fixed it for you. -MD

This Church is trully beautiful because it contains the pillar on which Our Lord was scourged and you can get really close to it. It also has buried in it the bodies of over 2000 martyrs!

    St Mary Mary Major

This beautiful Church has a crpipt with the most beautiful life like large statue of of Pius IX kneeling before the wood from the crib of Our Lord.

The Church of St. Sebastian above his catacombs has his grave and also one of the arrows that was shot at him and the pillar to which he was tied and beaten to death.

Another beautiful Church is the Church of the Apostles where you can visit the grave of St. Philip and James in the cript.

  • Sounds exciting, Trace. Hope you have a good time.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

I pray you have an inspiring visit to the Eternal City, Trace!   Hope you can take a trad priest along.  He will be able to say mass in the Vatican at one of their small alters.  This was true back in the late 90's.  Dont know how true now.  When Ive gone with priests, mass was sometimes in a hotel room.

You can actually see Christ's blood on the stairs?! Wow.

Ascending the Holy  staircase is done on your knees.  They usually have a prayer booklet available for the indulgenced prayers.   The practice is called "making the stairs"  If you have health problems there are side stairs to ascend to the Holy chapel above.
Dont remember for sure, but there are 2 or three  spots of blood on the stairs.  They are covered over with glass.  The pilgrim should bend down and kiss the spot, as he continues up the stairs.
Make sure everyone in the group can do this, as you cannot stand on the stairs.  Once starting up, you have to continue on your knees to the top.

This website link gives the prayers and the History of the Holy Stairs.  Trace, I recommend you  print these prayers and take them with you, as the prayer booklets at the church may not be available.

According to Tradition, St. Peter was fleeing Rome after the beheading of St. Paul and he was just outside Rome when he heard a voice saying, "Quo Vadis?" which in latin means, where are you going?

St. Peter then heard the voice of Our Lord reply, "I am going to Rome to be crucified again."

When Peter heard the words of Our Lord, he realised that he was being cowardly and running away and he returned to Rome where he was crucified though he did not consider himself worthy to die in the same way as Our Lord and he asked to be crucified up side down.

When I was at the Catacombs of St. Sebastian which is not far from Quo Vadis, the place where this occured, the guide said there is a foot print and Tradition says it is the foot print of Our Lord.

  • I went to Rome on a tour when I was stationed in Germany (long before the U.S. was engaged in all the wars).  When the rest of the tour group went on one of the tourist excursions, I and two friends just wandered around the city seening the various churches and bascillicas that aren't on the tourist maps.  It is so long ago, I don't remember any of the names of the churches but there are a lot of hidden treasures that the tourist maps ignore for some reason (one reason, I think, is a lack of parking available for buses).

Sometimes wandering around is even better than the tours.

We went into one church just a block away from the hotel and the pastor walked out of a room and was suprised to see us.  After discovering we were American, he took (he was not Italian and he spoke impeccable American-English) he took us to the basement.  They had been repairing something when they discovered catecombs and tombs and altars of first century martyrs.  He was so excited about showing them off to people since no one ever went there--the Church wasn't on any of the maps.

It is too bad that all these churches are in the hands of the Protestants now.

Keep your wallet in your front pants pocket and keep any eye on the pick pockets.  They really are everywhere and many of them are very good.

  • I talked to my priest tonight about the trip.  If anyone has randomly followed I am actually in the middle of catechism and conversion.  He said he would like to have me go as an actual catholic aka Baptized.  I'll need to talked to him regarding actual Confirmation there.  But really Confirmation in Rome, wow.
