  • what if a woman was forcibly raped and conceived what should be done with the attitude that she might have that she should get an abortion since she does not want to carry the child. She says that it would daily remind her of the horrible rape and that she does not desire to be tormented daily about that traumatic event.

What should be explained to her?

  • First of all, pregnancies that happen because of rape are less than 1% of pregnancies - so such a situation is rare. Secondly, if it does happen, studies have shown that most rape victims actually want to keep the baby and it is others who pressure her into seeking abortion. Thirdly, abortion does not un-rape the woman. Her trauma is from the rape and not from being pregnant. Abortion,in fact, adds to the trauma and studies have shown increase of depression, drug use, and suicidal feelings with women who decide to abort their baby.
