  • My understanding (always said with the caveat that it is my current [i.e. subject to change] understanding) of sin is that it is at its core an offense against and in the eyes of God.
    Help? I think??

  • Yes, sin is always sin and therefore to be shunned.
However the harsh reality is that, being sinful creatures, there is, for all of us, a strong possibility of sinning.

    Consider two scenarios.
    1. A man is tired and hungry and his wife is nagging about how he left his dirty socks  in some wrong place. So he screams at her angrily. A venial sin.

    2. A man is tired and hungry and his wife is nagging about how he left his dirty socks some wrong place. So he thinks to himself, I won't put up with this. The next time she does this I'll kill her, and he does keep his promise to himself. Mortal sin.

To be mortal means to result in hellfire without repentance. To be mortal it must be a serious matter, done with sufficient reflection/knowledge of evil and free will.

Of course, there's more to say than that but this might help clarify:

  • It's common sense.

A lie about a small matter is not the same thing as publicly slandering a man or attempting to destroy his reputation. For example, coming forward and saying that a Supreme Court nominee tried to sɛҳuąƖly assault you 36 years ago, when such isn't the case (or you can't remember who sɛҳuąƖly assaulted you 36 years ago because you were drunk).

And sin is always to be condemned, even if we ourselves sin. Obviously it behooves us to cut our neighbor some slack, especially regarding venial sins which virtually everyone commits. But it would be foolish to let murderers, rapists, traitors, and other serious criminals off the hook, because "we are sinners ourselves!" or "who can cast the first stone?" (perhaps yesterday you got angry while in traffic).

God is MORE just than man, not less just. So if we (being evil and imperfect) can distinguish the difference between stealing a candy bar from a store, and embezzling a widow out of her life savings, don't you think God makes such a distinction as well?

  • When you have a background check run (simple example I know) there isn’t really much of a distinction between a stolen candy bar or a stolen bicycle.
I kind of get the point you are making that there IS a distinction, but at the same time don’t get it.
You see, to me anyway, crime is crime and sin is sin. It may be more or less serious, but degree never takes away from the fact that it’s a wrong action/thought/deed etc. it is still wrong.
This kind of ties into my fundamentalist thread in that fundamentally theft of a candy bar is no less wrong than taking an innocent person life. Sure, they have differing impacts on an individual and society, but both are still fundamentally wrong and incorrect.
I would encourage all of you not to try to prove that you are right in your stance or take on it, rather what I seek is you YOUR stance and why you take it. YOU just might be the one that gets my perception into the right alignment.

  • Put aside sin for the moment.

    1. A hammer falls on a man's toe. His toenail is bruised and painful.
    2. A brick wall falls on a child and she becomes paraplegic.

These things (which are not sins) are both bad.
Is there a degree of badness?

Yes, of course. The results of the first example are temporary and slight.
The results of the second are permanent and serious.

There are different degrees in everything. The same applies to sin.

Nobody is saying degree never takes away from the fact that it’s a wrong action/thought/deed etc. Sin is sin, as you rightly say. But, as Matthew said, It's common sense....don't you think God makes such a distinction as well?

  • There are different degrees of sin. There is venial sin and there is mortal sin. Just as there are different degrees of sin there are different degrees of punishment in both Purgatory and Hell depending on the gravity of what we did.
