  • St. Athanasius, The Life of St. Anthony [or: Vita Antoni]:

    Quote
Yet once more the enemy, seeing his zeal and wishing to check it, threw in his way the form of a large disc of silver. Antony, understanding the deceit of the Evil One, stood and looked at the disc and confuted the demon in it, saying, "Whence a disc in the desert? This is not a trodden road, and there is no track of any faring this way. And it could not have fallen unnoticed, being of huge size. And even if it had been lost, the loser would certainly have found it had he turned back to look, because the place is desert. This is a trick of the devil. You will not hinder my purpose by this, Satan; let this thing perish with thee." And as Antony said this, it disappeared like smoke before the face of the fire.

What in the world was this illusory disc? A flying saucer? If so, can we then rightly conclude that flying saucer "sightings" are actually illusions of the devil?

  • I think we can safely say flying saucers are demonic manifestations.  Further, we can look at the fruits of these UFO stories and see how banal they are.

Do you have some more on St. Antony?   Do you happen to know which desert, where he was exactly?    I love obscure saint stories.

Yes, the fruits of "abduction" stories always seem rotten.

Here's the actual book I just finished reading:

TAN books unfortunately changed the title. In any event it's 106 pages of pure gold.

  •  No more details are given other than it's a large disc of silver that's big enough to be noticed from afar, and it's just sitting there on the ground. It's certainly not a flying object. I think what St.Athanasius is describing here is the devil trying to lure St.Anthony into a minor love of material wealth by presenting him with this very large piece of silver. Basically satan tempted him by dropping $1,000,000 from the sky.

Sorry Jitpring, but I think you got carried away after reading "silver disc".  :smirk:

I'll make it up to you though... lol

I remember reading in one of the lives of the saints (and I think it was St.Ignatius Loyola) that after having finished praying at night, this glowing orb of light flew into his hermitage. It didn't display any kind of malicious behavior, but on the contrary, it made him feel full of love, peace, and joy... kind of like putting him into a sort of ecstasy. But he quickly grabbed his staff and started beating it and chasing it from his cave.

I've heard so many people give accounts of orbs like this and then afterwards associating them with extra-terrestrials/aliens. These people don't bother to drive them away, but lose themselves in the ecstasy experienced in it's presence. I heard one guy say that after he recited the Holy Name of Jesus the orb disappeared immediately. Now that tells you everything right there.

Yes, that's from St. Ignatius' autobiography, which I recently read. Wonderful!

  • Hi WisconsinsheepGirl,

Solnge Hertz's brilliant essay is entitled, Hell's Amazing Grace.

I will try to find a link for you, maybe The Remnant has it archived.  I think it was copied at Angelqueen a few years ago.  I think you will find it profoundly interesting.
