  • I don't live near a TLM. I cannot move house at the moment because I am in college, but I miss the mass. Will God forgive my refusal to move house to go live somewhere that they have a traditional church?

  • Do you have an SSPX Chapel near your college?

    No, and the nearest one is so far that it makes it impossible to go. The masses are on too early so I would have to stay overnight in a hotel.

  • Not everyone starts out by a TLM.

    But it should be your #1 priority in the coming years, ahead of things like:

    * Family lives closeby
    * I have friends there
    * Better pay
    * Close to entertainment, culture, things to do
    * I like the state/culture
    * I'm familiar with this place

    In other words, there are a host of reasons people choose to live in one place instead of another. But if a place had "everything" going for it, but there is no true Mass available -- you need to reconsider that "everything" bit. Without the Mass, you have nothing.

    The Mass is of infinite value, and without the Faith and the Sacraments, this whole life is a waste. What does it matter if you are surrounded by all earthly comforts -- a high paying job, all kinds of entertainment just 15 minutes from your house, plus legitimate (not-so-base) comforts like having friends and family nearby, but you end up losing your soul for lack of spiritual direction, confession, and the graces from the Mass? Summed up in one word, it would be: Fail. (Download the MP3 at the bottom of my post for the audio version!)

    All things pass. That INCLUDES friends and family. It certainly includes pleasures, enjoyments, money, your house, land, stuff, the people around you, etc. The only things that persist are supernatural treasures.

    I realize it's difficult to up and move, especially for a family. But when a family DOES have to move for other reasons (job for the unemployed man of the house?), all the other concerns should be weighed as golf balls, and the presence of a TLM should be represented by a cinder block. Then weigh everything in a balance.

  • Matthew, I'd give you a +10 if I could.
    This pertains to vacations, also.  Why would a Catholic vacation somewhere where they cannot fulfill their obligation to attend Mass on a Sunday/holyday?
    We've moved several times to be close to a TLM.  The move itself can seem inconvenient, but the return on investment is priceless!

  • soulguard, we don't know your circuмstances, of course, but this is an excellent book:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1591842980/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1591842980&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwchanco-20

    It may help you structure your finances so that you can be near a TLM and attend college.  Ask the Holy Ghost to guide you and you will not fail.

  • Its not something like internet marketing is it?

    ps: The government gives grants to pay for college in my country. :cool:
    Except if you want to go to certain colleges or do certain courses. Then you must pay.

    I thought you were moving to the woods to live alone.

    How are you planning to attend mass out there in the woods?

    Are any traditional priests also Ents?

  • We have the same problem. Even the "local" NO is twenty miles away, the "local" SSPX is 60 miles away.
    But we have a bit if land and if I can figure out how to orchastrate all the resources and approvals, etc. I'd like to build a small chapel and rectory to hold the Latin mass here in town. It might not be much, but the mass is the mass if it's in your living room, an old folks home rec room or a makeshift chapel in my yard.
    Now, if I could just get an adventurous priest who's willing to build his parish from the ground up!!  :incense:
    Must love dogs and kids.

  • If you are going to move for the mass, it is better to do it when single and you are in a time of your life when you can afford to be flexible.

    I've seen families move for the mass and the situation changes. The priest gets odd ideas, there is scandal, the whole thing collapses. It is much easier to deal with it when single than married. If you are not able to provide for yourself and the whole thing goes belly up, you may find yourself in a worse situation. The stability of the chapel must be evaluated with these things in mind before making a decision. Of course, some people have nothing to lose either way and each situation is different.

    We nearly had our bags packed for Cincinatti. It would have been an incredible blunder. In the meantime, we learned to be content with our current situation, knowing that God has us where we can best save our souls, as long as we are open to doing His Will, He provides.

  • Excellent response, Mabel.  It's more complicated than some young adventurers make it sound.  I'd can't see how God would want one to leave the care of one's parents to fly off to the rocky cliff of some of the present trad scenes.  Also, it's is going to affect any children one might have.

    All sanctity does not accuмulate to conquistadors. A good bit of holiness is assumed by those that watch and maintain as much of the faith as possible. I'm not trying to make up a case for home-aloners.

    Recklessness is not next to Godliness.

    Indeed.
    Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
