  • Somebody asked Fr Serpa
My husband is in the military and in light of the recent violence in response to the alleged Qur'an burnings in the middle east, he decided to have his own tribute to the fallen soldiers by burning one in our back yard. I was really disturbed by this and am wondering if I have a right to be.

    Fathers answer

    Dear friend,

It is not a sacred text for us and burning it privately would not be a sin. Burning it publicly could be a sin against charity since it is considered sacred by those who sincerely believe it to be so. Further, I would not advice doing such a thing for your own safety. You never know how news about such things can travel around.

    Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.

  • I don't blame the soldier one bit for a bit of BBQ in his own back yard.

    It's nobody's business.

  •   Even if you burn sth privately, people see you buying and carrying their book, though without knowing what you are going to do with it. It will be an scandal for passer-bys:" oh look! Catholics are advocating muslims, yes they are all the alike."  and it makes muslim puff up themselves:" see they are buying our book, they are seeing our truth". :fryingpan:
      So don't buy one.

  • If you're going to burn any religion's holy texts you should consider burning the тαℓмυd, the things it says about Jesus and the BVM amongst other things are nothing short of absolute blasphemy and sacrilege.

From what I understand at least the Koran accepts Jesus as a prophet and holds his mother in the highest regard.

Personally, I don't believe it's proper for a Christian to go out of his way burning anyone's religious texts, leave that to the Church and the heretics.
