  • Should health insurance be mandatory (over age 26)?

I think everyone should be mandated to have insurance. I never thought I would say that,  just don't like the government mandating us to do things. But healthcare… well,  being healthy is everyone’s concern. I can’t  believe the premiums some people are paying, and paid even before there was Obamacare!

People on entitlements usually get healthcare “free.” But they can pay something, even if it is only, say, 2% of their income.

Here is why no one should get any substantial benefit like (basic) healthcare for free:

For one thing, when you get something for free, you have virtually no say in the laws that govern that something... which is how it is-- when you depend on the government. From what I have seen, it is never good to be dependent on government. People on Disability got a few a “raises” when Obama was in office, not big ones, but I say that every govt program should be and definitely could be cut by something like 1 or 2% and instead, the person being assisted could use that cut in his/her check to by health insurance. Again, no one should get anything “free..” not that there is anything really free—

They should have the choice of where to get healthcare, etc… but everyone should have some kind of basic plan, one that covers (mostly) catastrophic incidents.  Only people who have no income at all should have access to cost-free healthcare. But of course, someone has to pay for that, which is where Medicaid comes in?

Anyone with an income, even if it is not much, should  pay for a health insurance that covers essential health care.

Those who pay, say, 40% of their income on rent or more could have some kind of exemption (Medicaid?)..

Bottom  line: healthcare  needs to be affordable... If those on entitlements  paid something like 2% of their income for healthcare, others who make a lot of money could pay, say, 4% or whatever… there could be brackets, just like in the tax code, based on income.

With everyone paying into the healthcare system, the premiums would go down. Then it would be affordable and not just for a few—as is the case under O-care.

At first, I resisted this mandate idea because on the face of it, it tends to look like the govt forces you to buy something. But we are not talking about just any old thing being purchased. Everyone should be responsible for his own health, to the extent possible.

I hate to pick on the poor (so many others do that so well), but I know some poor people who get this and that entitlement, and they are fat and probably unhealthy. I know one (know of one, that is) who seems to drink the biggest from-the-fountain  pop he can get, and drinks those, apparently every day. These people can spend  money on health insurance. Two percent of their income is not much. I think that if everyone paid insurance, low income people would spend  less for healthcare every month than what they spend on a 32-oz of pop every day. With them not being in the insurance pools, they are  causing the middle class  to have to pay far too much for health care.

Tell me where I am wrong..

why should one person be forced to pay for something another one can at least contribute to? No one is asking the poor to pay the same premium as a rich person. But they can pay something.
You think someone should get excess food and pop to eat and drink but not have to maybe save some of that excess.. and use it for healthcare?
well... sorry but one thought i have is:
no wonder we have all these problems

  • I don't think anyone should be forced to buy insurance they do not want. And I don't trust our government at all and want it to get out of nearly everything it is involved in. Unlike most people today I would much prefer a small government with maybe ten percent taxes and little welfare and fewer government enforced cartels and have the poor rely mostly on private charities and Churches for support. Of course I know this will never happen because everyone today worships the government and thinks everything should be given to them for free.

  • The poor could pay a token amount.  Maybe a 5% payroll deduction.  This would be for hospital care.  Every state could have a high deductible catastrophic policy for young and healthy or those who don't quite qualify as poor. Best plan is try to stay healthy

  • To be honest, I am unsure.

On the one hand, I would say no, the government should not be forcing someone to buy a product simply because they are alive (major difference between car insurance - you are only mandated to purchase it if you choose to own a car).

On the other hand, what is to be done with people who choose not to purchase insurance, but then need medical care and cannot afford to pay for it?  Are they turned away and left to get sicker and die?  Should the doctors be forced to treat them without compensation?  Neither seems right.  Does the government pay their bill?  If so, then why not just require them to have insurance in the first place?

And around and around it goes.

I do not have health insurance , nor do I believe I should have any health insurance. The government is killing millions of people though the big Pharmaceutical (666). We need to get back to organic food and we need to get away from the Pharmaceutical industry.

i agree, except maybe w/ that last part about how things will never change. They probably won't change, but things could change.. if only people would get involved. I think far too many Christians keep themselves out of the public.. um.. work (sometimes my mind goes blank vis a vis word choice). I have heard a lot of Christians say something to the effect that God doesn't want us involved w/ politics.. In fact, those exact words..
well, i guess if one wants to live in a dirty house, he is welcome to it. But the stench will eventually cause him to do something about the problem (you would think). Yes, there are people who can (apparently) live with disgusting smells.. I am not so good @ that kinda thing myself

i agree we should go back to nature. that said, i think a lot of non-organic foods are just fine. I know someone who couldn't have cared less about organic or natural... ate in restaurants a lot.. ate pork almost every day. She lived to be 98 yrs old. Organic is better but it is very expensive, which means the poor cannot afford to go all organic. maybe they can buy an organic apple once a month

You have reflected my dilemma very well here, have had the same exact thoughts. I don't like the govt telling me what to do. But think about it: EVERYONE gets sick.. doesn't matter if u are 20 or 70, you are going to have health problems here/there

that is the thing that led me to believe that maybe health insurance.. or a small contribution toward it anyway should be required. Again, why should your neighbor be forced to pay for your health? Can he also dictate to you that you eat healthy (whatever that may mean, really) and excercise (too much excersize is not healthy, i've heard).. I mean, someone is going to "control you" at least to some extent.. your neighbor? the govt? If your neighbor is paying for your health costs, I would say he has a right to tell u what to do to some extent... Quit smoking those **(((^%$ cigarettes, etc..

We need to get over this thing about how EVIL it is to "be controlled"

And i never thought i would type something like THAT! I know better than most people how exceedingly AWFUL it is to be controlled by someone. I had a stalker once and I couldn't do anything without this crazy person knowing about it... and interfering some way or another w/ MY business. But health care is -- like i said, everyone gets sick sooner or later

  • No. There is no part of the Constitution which gives the government the right to force citizens to purchase anything.

We must return to functioning as a Constitutional Republic if there is any hope for this country.

  • There seems to be no distinction in this conversation between people of AVERAGE to ABOVE AVERAGE income who choose not to purchase health insurance and POOR people who choose not to purchase insurance.

The first group would not automatically have their expenses covered if they had an accident and became sick. In many, many cases, they'd have to figure out how to pay for what they need before they'll receive medical care. Even in the event of an emergency, they'd rack up a bill from the hospital and then make payments over an extended period of time.

It is INCOME level which determines whether or not a government or charitable program will provide for your health care costs, not simply the absence of insurance.

yeh, well, sometimes I agree. Sometimes I don't because if only some people buy health insurance, well, who is going to pay for the ones who were too cheap and selfish to do so? Are we going to let them die?
that's not too Constitutional either. I mean, you know, one of the rights listed, the very first i believe  in the Declaration is the right to LIFE.. can't have life w/o reasonably good health. I mean, you can die from an infected tooth and a lot of other things that seem not so catastropic.. until you don't tend to them properly
