In NYC this week, a college freshman was killed in an armed robbery, where a 13-year-old, among others, stabbed her to death.

This raises the question: is 13 too young to be tried as an adult, especially when it comes to a crime like murder?

Some people think no, but others are overlooking his age and saying yes.

I think yes and no.  Each case could be different.
When a young teen or even pre teen flaunts the fact that "I'm a minor" to parents and authority, they have the maturity to know what they are doing is wrong and the answer is YES.
When a minor commits a crime in the company of their parent or someone years older who is influencing or forcing them then the answer is NO.

  • Of course he should be tried as an adult. He  intentionally killed another person. It’s not like he’s a 3 year old who shot or stabbed someone because he doesn’t know what guns and knives do.  He knows what he’s doing. At that age I’d be horrified by things like that. If he’s got the will to kill someone( especially a defenseless woman) he should be tried as an adult. If convicted, he should promptly be put to death. Letting murderers live sends a message that one can do this and only suffer the punishment of being thrown into prison. Putting them to death sends a clear message to those who might think of doing things like this. He stabbed a defenseless woman to death. He gets no sympathy from me

  • OP presents an interesting question.  Think about it.  Just one mortal sin committed by a child of the age of reason could send that child to hell -- with no chance for parole or time served for good behavior -- for all eternity!

  • There was an incident accusing a number of teenagers with 'wilding' in the murder and rape of a woman jogger. There was a lot of outcry for them to be put to death etc... Today thanks to DNA evidence it is known that they were innocent. Many years in jail. A child hood ruined.
I think we should wait and see.

  • For every truly innocent person behind bars in America zillions of guilty ones are continuing their criminal life thanks to the often overly lenient revolving door justice system.  Certainly one reason why cops are often so demoralized and tend to see their jobs as not much more than a paycheck.

  • A 13-year-old knows what life and death is. He knows what killing someone means. He also has a basic idea of what sorts of violence are capable of killing someone. So yes, if he killed someone he should be tried for murder like anyone else.

  • I'm a bit torn on this.  Of course a 13-year-old is capable of committing a great sin and a great crime, but there is a sense in which they're still immature.  I think that their youth should be taken into account as an exenuating circuмstance when it comes time for sentencing.  I don't believe that a 13-year-old should be subject to a death penalty, nor do I believe they should serve time in an adult prison system (due what would inevitably happen to them there).  Perhaps something like a life sentence with a possibility of parole after about 10-15 years, depending on whether they show any clear signs of rehabilitation.
