Seizures during Rosary

  • My adult son (23) has been having 1 or 2 seizures per year for a couple of years now. We've been to the doctor and he could give no reason for it but recommenced a prescription. We didn't go along with his advice right away. A few times later I noticed a trend, he always seized during or immediately after saying the Rosary, whether at church (twice) or at home. I spoke with my priest about it a while ago and asked if there was some sort of exorcism he could perform but he doubted the problem was spiritual and advised me to try medical cures first so we put him on the prescription. Well, he had another episode recently and the doctor said that the Rosary connection was odd and that we should increase the dose of the prescription and he should pray with us from a separate room. That's where we are right now and I don't think its helping because he stills feels "odd" every so often during Rosary.

I'm going to go back to my priest and ask again but I really have no idea of even what to ask for. If anyone has any real information to help me here I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for your prayers and God bless,
    JoeZ

Are you seeing a traditional Priest?

A few months ago, I had serious problems remaining attentive while praying the Hail Mary and other prayers to Our Lady. It felt so strange, and I had never experienced this before, so discussed it with my priest-confessor. He asked why I wanted prayers, so I told him about our neighbors who were Mussolini Italian nαzιs. These people left the local Roman Catholic parish in the late 1960s and have not darkened the steps of that parish since then. They have séances in their homes every week and use Tarot and palm readings. Weird things have happened to our cars almost weekly. And my husband had been having bad dreams of ghost intruders.

Our priest prayed a prayer immediately, and it worked.  Now, whenever we have bad dreams or something unusual happens, he will take time to pray for us, and make sure we have plenty of holy water and blessed candles.
    Lord have mercy.

I do attend to the Traditional Latin Mass exclusively, and have not and will not participate in the New Mass since my conversion from the Novus Ordo twenty-five years ago.

So now you've "tried the medical cures" (actually these are not cures, merely treatments), it's probably time to seek help as if it were a spiritual problem. It certainly cannot hurt for the priest to offer prayers for and with your son. Or seek advice from another traditional priest.

Is your doctor a believing Catholic? The suggestion of praying with you but from a separate room seems a strange one.

  • Are LED candles being used instead of real candles?

Sometimes flickering lights can cause a seizure.

  • Because of his work he is present at perhaps one in ten of the family's daily rosary. He used to try to make them up driving home but has stopped. He says he feels odd perhaps one in four rosaries.

Okay, so that is 3 times per month, which makes his Rosary with the family 36 times a year, and only once or twice it is with the family? That is not a good enough statistic, in my opinion, to establish something diabolical. It is probably more likely something with the content of his diet, and the timing of the diet with when the Rosary is prayed.

I agree and that is why I did not go to my priest immediately and why I also accepted his opinion to seek medical cures first. I'm simply leaving myself open to the possibility.

The first thing my wife tried was a gluten free diet and it doesn't seem to help. The doctor(neurologist) doesn't say much with regard to diet when we bring it up. We have not done anything further with diet but I admit that I'd prefer diet to help him over any other method.

It was asked earlier if the neurologist is Catholic and I must answer I don't know but I doubt it.

    Thanks and God bless,

Medical doctors don't know much about diet because they don't study nutrition in medical school.

If you want to know more regarding nutrition you'll have to seek out a nutrition specialist.

As for praying in a separate room, I don't know how that could help anything.

Have you tried having him wear a properly blessed St. Benedict medal all the time?

You're not seeking medical "cures."  It is only treatment, not cures.

  • In my experience (caring for someone) with seizures over the past three years (four seizures last year), there are trigger conditions to monitor.  Diet, sleep, and stress are direct contributors to the onset of a seizure.  Changes in medication, combinations of medications, and alcohol consumption are contributors.  Kneeling, and the stress it can cause on the body, could be contributing to the situation.  Any kind of disagreements or arguing about anything (even the irrational things said by the person, as concussion type injuries leading to seizures often include).

My advice would be to have the person pray the Rosary in the most comfortable position possible, perhaps sitting in a good chair or on the couch.  Give the person everything they need to be comfortable (i.e. a glass of water, a paper with the prayers, a graphic of the mysteries, etc.).

Managing seizures is a non-stop occupation, stay strong.

Not sure either and I believe it doesn't help.

We do have him sit in a big soft chair to mitigate any fall.
