You'd think his immodest avatar would have given him away or at least aroused some suspicion. It's practically screaming "flamer". I don't know if it depicts a saint or not, but if it does, I somehow doubt the saint would approve of being portrayed like that.

It does depict a Saint, one of the first martyrs, and is in the full lurid Italianate style of pathos, something that seems strange to modern eyes, but if you also read the literature that was produced about martyrs before "The Enlightenment" you will see a lot of emotional language that sounds strange to modern ears, too.

No, his avatar was fine. It was just a painting of Saint Sebastian.

All of the depictions of Saint Sebastian are somewhat like that.
Nudity (partial or otherwise) in art is fine so long as the object is not impure arousal, et cetera. I recommend reading about the reign of Pope Saint Pius V on this issue.

I agree completely, but I also notice that moderns have much less capacity for non-sɛҳuąƖ viewing of the human body than in the past. I blame that on Protestant hyper-repression and the collapse of multi-layered culture into strictly intellectual materialism.
