  • It's amazing how protestants (almost) universally reject alcohol, and yet here it is in Scripture!

Nevertheless, I like the quote "woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine" -- because I often have to defend myself around other traditional Catholics who like their alcohol MUCH more than I do (which is barely at all).

I'm HOPpy for them, but I BARLEY like alcoholic beverages. A CUPple reasons are because it's expensive, and when I was growing up, I didn't know anyone who drank that I admired (quite the contrary -- the BREWd of drinkers were often in trouble with the law, etc.). (Ok, enough puns. I can't think of anymore  :laugh1:)

  • Getting drunk is a mortal sin and getting tipsy is a venial sin, right? Well, if it is the case that getting tipsy is a venial sin, then why did Jesus perform the miracle at Cana and make more wine? If they had run out of wine, then obviously, the guests had drank a little too much since all the wine was gone. Which means that there must have been tipsy guests at the wedding which Jesus knew of. Or else, if they weren't tipsy yet, then giving them more wine to drink would end up making them tipsy.

  • Moderate drinking of alcohol (with dinner/on special occasions/etc.) is not a sin.

Don't forget that weddings lasted for several days and there were many many people in attendance. They very well could have been drinking moderately for a few days (while consuming mass amounts of food) and run out. This wouldn't be a drunk-fest, just bad planning.
