  • St. Matthew chapter 11

    Quote
[16] But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place. [17] Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned. [18] For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil. [19] The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.

Human beings with their fallen nature have certain habits that transcend the ages. In this example, you have a group of men who hated Our Lord, and so He could "do no right"!

John the Baptist was austere, living in the desert on locusts and wild honey. Their response? "He has a devil." Our Lord on the other hand lived among the people, eating and drinking with them, healing and converting many -- and His enemies weren't content with that either!

My lesson from this scripture quote: You can't win with some people. Just learn to deal with it and you'll have peace. Also, you will never get to a point where you have no enemies. Regardless of how holy you are, or how objectively in possession of the truth you are.

  • Matthew, I would agree and add that increasing sanctity actually provokes more venomous reactions from those who would rather eat pottage than keep their birthright.

It's just not easy to have a healthy mistrust of the world when the approval of people is so addictive.

Our Lord asked His listeners, "What did you go out to see; a reed shaken by the wind?" when they spoke of John the Baptist. Or were they expecting a fancy-robed delegate to Herod's court?

St. John the Baptist was neither. He didn't compromise to make his daily life more comfortable, rather choosing mortification. He also didn't compromise his stance on the corruption within Israel's government; he could have been a chief priest if he did.

No, acceptance by the Lord has built into it the promise of opposition. It's not how well we navigate that opposition that matters; it's how faithful to the Faith we remain despite, or even welcoming, that vitriol.
This evil of heresy spreads itself. The doctrines of godliness are overturned; the rules of the Church are in confusion; the ambition of the unprincipled seizes upon places of authority; and the chief seat [the Papacy] is now openly proposed as a rewar

I find that I am better able to deal with and less likely to start hurling insults to a person that I pray for.
