  • I would be interested in hearing about how people on the forum use sacramentals.  I wear the brown scapular, to which I have attached a Miraculous Medal.  I carry a rosary in my pocket with a centerpiece (it that is the proper term) with am image of the Blessed Virgin on one side and St. Joseph on the other.  I attached a small medal of St. Michael to it as well. I carry a green scapular and a Sacred Heart badge in my wallet, and have a chain with medals of St. Christopher and St. Nicholas hanging from the mirror in my car.  This is perhaps a bit excessive, but I feel very comforted by all of this.

When my wife and I first married, we bout a statue of St. Michael (my name) and an icon of St. Anne (Her name).  We added an icon, statue, or other image for the patron saint of each of our children and grandchildren, and gave each of the the exact same image at birth.  We added some others for other family members or close friends over the years.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • Sigismund- I don't think its excessive at all. Actually its quite inspiring and makes me feel foolish not to use these gifts that have been given to us.

My parents and sister (and her husband) have the St. Benedict medal over each and every window and doorway in their home. I need to get on it!

  • I don't think we do or have enough.  I carry a Fatima Rosary with me in my purse.  I have two icons I "accidentally" inherited from my great Aunt--one of Pope Pius X and one of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  I have a painting I acquired at a garage sale of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  My daughter has a real love for the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Her room is filled with small little icons we've collected from our chapel.  I hope to fill our house with more over the years,

I don't think it is silly at all.  I think we receive many graces in keeping ourselves surrounded by images of Our Lord, Our Blessed Mother, and all the saints.  It certainly keeps our minds focused on the right things.

  • I never remove my brown scapular. I am a member of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Rosary and I usually carry a rosary with me everywhere.  I also wear a Miraculous Medal and I wear a pin from the Holy Name Society, of which I am also a member.

My apartment's walls are covered with holy images, including Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, a poster with the Stations of the Cross, and an olive-wood crucifix and the famous Sacred/Immaculate Heart picture over my bed. In addition, I have statues of St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Michael Archangel, and three BVM's. Most of these items have been blessed by a traditional priest. I also carry and regularly read from different holy cards.

My next project is to get a holy water fount and keep it filled for regular use. Before I had a home altar but now I don't have room for something formal so I keep these things in different places. I normally pray kneeling at the foot of the bed facing the crucifix and Hearts picture. Sometimes I put one of the statues on the bed too while I pray.
St. Jude, who, disregarding the threats of the impious, courageously preached the doctrine of Christ,
    pray for us.

  • I was given a holy water font by a relative for Christmas when I was in high school.  It has been right inside the front door of all the houses or apartments I have lived in over the years.  When we built our house, my wife and I and the children we had arrived at that point placed a St Benedict medal in the foundations.

I took stock of all the sacramental and images I have in my house today.  Two things happened as a result of this.  I found myself missing my deceased wife more than usual.  These things were such an essential part of our marriage and family life.  Now that it is just me and the animals in the house, despite occasional sad days like this, these images have brought me a great deal of comfort.

Also, I was surprised, embarrassed, and annoyed to find that I do not have a single image of the Sacred Heart anywhere in this house.  We were fortunate enough to be able to have a chapel of sorts in one room.  The centerpiece of that was a beautiful wooden crucifix and a set of Byzantine icons of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary on either side.  I noticed today that both of these icons were gone.  I emailed all my children to ask if any of them had them.  One of my daughters responded that she had asked me for them when my wife died.  I don't remember this at all, which is not surprising, but that was four years ago and some how I managed to never notice until today.  I ordered two similar icons I found on line today.

  • I have been wearing the five fold scapular again now that I found them at the Mount gift shop.

When I was a youngster, I remember being enrolled in the five fold scapular, so when I found it again, I purchased one and have been wearing it now for several years.

If you are not familiar here is a link:   http://www.ihomm.org/five.html

    Please pray for my soul.

  • I just got a miraculous medal and St. Benedict medal for my scapular. I was looking at the St. Benedict medal, and I noticed that this side:

... is inverted, as if you were looking at it in a mirror, so the words are written backwards, etc... Is this normal??

  • Growing up with a traditional Catholic grandmother and grandfather, I was surrounded by the 'holy reminders' of their faith. Being of Polish descent, my grandparents naturally adopted the Divine Mercy devotion associated with St. Faustina Kowalska. My grandmother was also a great lover of the Infant Jesus of Prague, and she had a large Infant figure (at least 12 inches tall) in a curio cabinet in her home.

Of course, her Rosary, Missal and prayer book were always prominently displayed on her dressing-table when she wasn't actively using them. There were holy cards stuck in mirrors, and of course there was a large Crucufix in every room of their home.

In their bedroom was a particularly moving picture of Christ on the Cross, with the Apostles and His Mother depicted in the 'budding' ends of the Cross. As a child, I remember being slightly scared by the detail of the picture, including His Holy Face in agony, but also drawn to the picture in love, as it certainly made sense to my young mind that if Jesus suffered that way for the sins of mankind, we should certainly remember that by reverently depicting it.

Sadly, I don't know what happened to most of my grandmother and grandfather's sacramentals; when my grandmother died (at age 96, Deo gratias), many relatives, including cousins by marriage and so on, were invited to just take whatever they wanted. Due to divorces, etc, we don't even speak to some of those people anymore, so it's impossible to say whether any of these holy items are even in faithful Catholic homes these days.

Anyway, as for me personally, I have a red-beaded Rosary with a relic medal of the Little Flower; there is a small square of fabric behind the medal that I am assuming makes the Rosary a third-class relic.

Immediately to my right, I have a small statue of St. Francis of Assisi, and an even smaller figurine of St. Padre Pio. In my possession, but not on display, is a small figurine of the Santo Nino.

I used to have quite a few vintage statues, Rosaries, etc, but several interstate moves forced their exit.

Also, as a side note, I am always interested in obtaining sacramentals that are not being used, would otherwise be given away or destroyed or sold. Please email me through the Forum if you have any sacramentals that need a good home.

I am especially interested in 15-decade Rosaries; new ones are hard to find, and those that are available are often extremely expensive, especially for someone out of work as I am.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you've got anything you can't use. Anything I encounter at yard sales, etc, that I don't plan on keeping, is brought to nursing homes and care centers for the shut-ins. I have also brought some sacramentals, especially Rosaries, to the local Catholic hospital near me, which has a lovely chapel. I leave some items there from time to time to encourage devotion to Our Lord in times of illness and for prayers for successful procedures.
This evil of heresy spreads itself. The doctrines of godliness are overturned; the rules of the Church are in confusion; the ambition of the unprincipled seizes upon places of authority; and the chief seat [the Papacy] is now openly proposed as a rewar

  • @s2rea:

According to this page, from the Benedictines' website, which discusses the medal, I don't see anything about printing in reverse being normal; they don't mention it as fas I can read. Perhaps someone will notice something in their writing that I miss:

  • I wear the Brown Scapular every day (I actually have two) and have a few Green Scapulars that I put in certain places. I also have a St. Padre Pio relic that I somtimes put in my pocket.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.
