    • Hello,

    What is the view of the Roman Catholic Church regarding Sacraments and the SSPX? Is taking Holy Communion or confessing from/to an SSPX Priest allowed or is it sacntioned? If sanctioned, what consequances can be issued?

    Yes, receiving sacraments for all the sacraments by the SSPX is approved by the Church hierarchy.

    That’s idiotic.  I mean, you probably don’t care about my own opinions, but even the pope says the sspx is Catholic.  You can plausibly have a different opinion than someone else regarding the exactitude of their irregular status, but to see them as a “non Catholic religion” makes zero sense

    • Rome’s official line is that it’s acceptable to go to an sspx for sacraments/the latin mass but just not out of a “schismatic spirit”.  She has also (per Francis) given jurisdiction to hear confessions and celebrate marriages.  However the sspx is considered by Rome to be in an irregular situation canonically.  So Rome probably wouldn’t recommend going to sspx chapels but they do allow it.

    I personally do believe lefebvre was correct and that his excommunication was unjust and that the sspx was never morally wrong in God’s eyes, but you asked for Romes stance, not whether I agree with it so...

    I share the belief that the SSPX is protecting our traditions and, more importantly, resisting the relativist approach that denies the univocity of Truth and opens to other doctrines as equal or equivalent (Holy Father affirmed on Italian national TV that islam and Cristians worship the same God, etc). I attend SSPX Mass.

    My concern does not pertain the merit, the morality, the doctrinal validity, the canonic legality and religious legitimacy of the SSPX. This we can debate in other threads and I will gladly participate.

    My concern is very simple: I want to avoid breeach of Canon and exposure to sanctions. if I receive the H. Eucharist from an SSPX Priest, am I in violation of Canon and can I be sanctioned by Rome?


    Can anyone, please, point me to docuмents that support either position?

    Thank you to all who replied for sharing your Faith, your time and your expertise/knowledge. I appreciated all the comments.

    I do care about yout opinion. I even share it.

    Unfortunately I need the Church's formal position as my actions may hurt others, very close to me as I find myself in a complicated hereditary predicament of family and other circuмstance that is pointless to explain here. What is relevant is that I cannot behave in violation of Canon, potentially exposing my actions to sanctions.

    I care about every one's opinions. I wouldn't post here if I didn't care. This is why I pray for the circuмstances to develop that there would be a reconciliation between the SSPX and the Holy See.

    Great! Your church and your popes say that non Catholics are saved! As a matter of fact, even atheists are saved! Heck, Bergoglio says there is no hell!

    :( This is egregious! It is really scary...

    Is anyone aware of similar postures by Rome, in Italy?

    A second thought comes to mind, but for another thread... does Rome automatically excommunicate all those who convert to Protestant and Orthodox denominations?
