  • 31 October 2006:

A salmonella outbreak that has been potentially linked to produce has sickened at least 172 people in 18 states, health officials said Monday. Health officials think the bacteria may have spread through some form of produce; the list of suspects includes lettuce and tomatoes. But the illnesses have not been tied to any specific product, chain, restaurants or supermarkets.

"We're very early in the investigation," said Dave Daigle, a spokesman for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No one has died in the outbreak, which stems from a common form of salmonella bacteria. Eleven people have been hospitalized, health officials said.

  • See why we need to start our own vegetable gardens -- however small and humble?

Pretty soon we won't be able to buy any vegetables without great risk.

At least what comes from our own backyard we can vouch for...

This makes me want to go work on my own garden *grin*
I grew a lot this year, but I'm switching to the "Square Foot Gardening" method -- I'm about to dig my first 4' by 4' square in the next couple days.

Being in the South, I can plant stuff once I get the garden dug up and the new soil mixed (I'm throwing out the existing soil down to 1 foot -- and filling it with a special mixture of Vermiculite, peat moss, compost, and sand)
Not summer crops like Tomatos and Peppers, but many other things -- because we don't get winter here :)

I just finished moving a BUNCH (many hundreds of pounds) of compost material into a new pile, so now I'm freed up for actual garden-related work.

  • What do you think is behind these outbreaks of E-Coli and Samonella. Why every few days are there new warnings??? All of the sudden every farmer every where forgot to wash their hands or started draining cattle refuse where they plant vegetables. Some thing is wacky here.

  • It's bound to cause problems, that's for sure.
