  • Just want to share a little tip on deodorants for any of you who, like me, are tired of paying through the nose for something that works.  I started using rubbing alcohol a few months ago and haven't looked back!

Antiperspirants clog the pores somewhat - even the best natural ones - and can end up on your clothes.  If I use rubbing alcohol as needed (several times / day sometimes) I find I don't have to do laundry as often.  I carry around a small plastic spray bottle of it.  When sprayed onto clothes it's only visible for a short time before it dries.  So far it hasn't ruined anything - not even my skin.

What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?

  • That's interesting but I'd be worried about it drying out sensitive underarm skin. I've been using milk of magnesia as a deodorant for several months. No aluminum, works better for me than any stick I've ever tried, and it's a bit cheaper.

  • Rubbing alcohol is a volatile and flammable liquid. Don't let anybody light up a cigarette near you.

  • My diet is very high fat - maybe that's why my skin hasn't dried out.

Don't the salt sticks contain aluminum?

  • I enjoy making my own after watching a few youtube videos on different variations. I put a few tablespoons of warm coconut oil in a bowl, then add about 10-15 drops of tea tree oil. I then add 20 or more drops of lemon oil to overpower the tea tree oil. Optionally I've added a touch of salt and shea butter. Stir it mixing the wet ingredients and then start adding baking soda and keep mashing away till it becomes somewhat dry. You want it stick together mostly without being too moist. I then put it in a little container and just dab my finger in it and apply. It's worked amazingly well, and hasn't marked any of my clothing.

Would you say the milk of magnesia is an effective antiperspirant or mostly a deodorant, or both?  I tend to think that preventing perspiration can't be a good thing, that's why I ask.

It's a deodorant, according to all I've read.

  • BTW, I use the 70% solution, nothing stronger. I started using it during Lent, thinking if it does dry out my skin I can use that as a mortification. But it didn't.

Another benefit of rubbing alcohol is that it can be used on clothing.  It cools as well as disinfects.
