Title: Rose or Violet?
Post by: Matto on March 26, 2017, 06:44:34 PM
Today is Laetare Sunday. If you went to a traditional Mass today, which color vestments did the priest wear? I was expecting the priest to wear rose vestments today but the priest wore violet instead. I was disappointed because I look forward to the priest wearing rose vestments. I asked someone about this and he said in the missal it says that the priest can wear rose or violet today. Every other time this Sunday came around since I started going to the traditional Mass the priest wore Rose. So which color did your priest wear?

I know they have rose vestments at my chapel because I saw the people who help set up the Mass lay out a rose chasuble for the priest to wear today but when the priest came he changed it to violet. I meant to ask the priest why no rose today but I did not get the chance to talk to him after Mass.

I just looked in my missal and it says violet for this Sunday. It is the SSPX 1962 Missal. But how come they always wore rose before this year. Was getting rid of rose one of the 1962 changes? Now I am confused.

You have me curious. We just discussed in a catechism lesson how you can assist at Mass 365 days out of the year and only see rose vestments twice.

Laetare Sunday should be rose, which is today.

My SSPX church doesn't have rose vestments. A set of Mass vestments can get very expensive, so I can see why.

Some "rose-colored" vestments are actually pink. As it was explained  to me, a real rose color should be more the color of the inside of a freshly-cut salmon. If this is true, and I'm not good with colors, then perhaps your priest chose to use the acceptable violet-colored vestment if he didn't like to wear pink. Just a guess. Color can be a picky thing for some people.

Many medium to small chapels can't afford rose vestments.  They stick to the standard colors (white, violet, green, red, black) because that's the most widely available and affordable colors for vestments in today's world.  Vestments (even simple ones) are obscenely expensive and to spend precious chapel resources on vestments which are used for only two Sundays in the liturgical year (Laetare and Gaudate) is too much.  The rubrics are very lenient when it comes to rose Sundays (Laetare and Gaudate) which specify that violet is always permissible.

I finally got a chance to ask father why he did not wear rose on Laetare Sunday. He said the vestments were not rose but were "hot pink" so he wore violet instead. So I guess the priests have been wearing the wrong color vestments all these years.

Ha ha.
I hope the person who bought or made those vestments wasn't there!

Someone actually down-thumbed this?? Why? Probably a Feeneyite looking to increase my negative stats regardless of what I say.

One option is to have a basket of rose colored
glasses in the vestibule for everyone to wear
if you don't have any rose colored vestments.

The "official" liturgical color actually is violet, even for Laetare Sunday (and Gaudete Sunday in Advent).  Rose vestments, however, are authorized for wear--and, in most people's opinion (I think), are more appropriate given the tradition of Rose vestments the two days in the year.

When I was in the Novus Ordo, the parish I was in had beautiful Rose vestments, obviously from long before Vatican 2.  The visiting priest (we did not have a resident priest), however, brought his own vestments--and they were HOT PINK!  It was horrid!  Believe me, if those vestments your priest has are hot pink, you don't want to see him in them.

I remember what the vestments looked like and I disagree with Father's description of them as "hot pink", but those were the words he used. But I think they may have been a more normal pink and not truly rose as described earlier in this thread. I would not myself describe them as "hot pink" as I picture that color in my mind, but they could be described as "pink." Since I was used to them I just assumed they were the right color but now I learned that I was wrong.
