Ron Paul On 'The Tonight Show': I Prescribed Birth Control, Would Not Ban Plan B

Ron Paul prescribed a lot of birth control during the four decades he worked as an obstetrician before becoming a congressman.

"I was also putting myself out of business, all this birth control," he told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" Tuesday. "They had less babies."

Paul has been one of the only high-profile Republicans to condemn Rush Limbaugh's "slut" comments and insincere apology. He has steered clear of the birth control firestorm and told Leno that he wouldn't ban the morning-after pill.

"The morning-after pill is a birth control pill," he said. "If people have reservations about abortion, the abortion is the issue, it isn't the birth control pill. It isn't the instrument. You don't not allow surgical instruments if they're used for certain things."

Paul describes himself as pro-life but is more moderate on abortion than Rick Santorum, who believes that women who conceive through rape should "make the best out of a bad situation."

When pressed last month on whether he would want one of his daughters to carry a baby to term if she was raped, Paul said he would not.

"No. If it's an honest rape, that individual should go immediately to the emergency room. I would give them a shot of estrogen," he said.

Paul told Leno that women should have a right to choose to have an abortion up to a certain point in the pregnancy.

“Yeah, I think so she should, but does the infant have the right to choose?” he said. “The baby at eight months and weighs eight pounds -- should you, the mother have the right to abort? I have not been able to accept that.”

Paul finished third in the Illinois primary Tuesday night and has not held a campaign event since March 14.

  • Well, this means I regret my vote for Paul.

One of the advantages at least, for voting for a candidate with little chance of winning, is that someone who doesn't win can't disappoint you with actual decisions.

  • I've been baffled from the beginning about traditional Catholics' embrace of Ron Paul.

He's the best to chose from in the GOP field, so it's not surprising to me.

Santorum is a phony. His support base is full of your typcial Protestant and Novus Ordite crowd that bases nearly their entire faith around abortion. These people obviously don't get the danger of supporting Israel.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

  • Ron Paul is a phony.  His fame is mostly due to his idea of abolishing the Fed, which is sort of like cutting off the head of a patient in order to treat his inoperable brain cancer.  No politician would really be allowed to do such a thing -- the nation would collapse into total chaos instantly -- and this guy is blowing hot air.  He makes less economic sense than Obama.  He plays on patriotic clichés, that is all he does, pushing Pavlovian buttons.

The reason trads like him is that they hate the Fed, and Ron Paul claims to also, and they haven't thought any further than that about it.  He sells a kind of fantasy that we can go back to 1792; which wasn't so great anyway, but it seems better than what we have today. He is just another demagogue making meaningless promises.

Readers: Please IGNORE all my postings here. I was a recent convert and fell into errors, even heresy for which hopefully my ignorance excuses. These include rejecting the "rhythm method," rejecting the idea of "implicit faith," and being brieflfy quasi-Jansenist. I also posted occasions of sins and links to occasions of sin, not understanding the concept much at the time, so do not follow my links.

    Agreed. All are woefully deficient.
