  • My latest project in my writing course is to compose an essay defending Catholic kingship. My intent is to demonstrate the necessity for Catholics to support monarchy using passages from Scripture, Church Fathers, saints, theologians etc... To be honest, I'm rather unsure of where exactly to start, and was hoping for some advice, or titles of orthodox theological texts relating to the matter.

    Thanks,
    CL

  • The Pope. The Davidic Kingdom. The Scriptures "Fear God, Honor the king"...I think you need to study the Catholic concept of the "Two swords."
'Take care not to resemble the multitude whose knowledge of God's will only condemns them to more severe punishment.'

    -St. John of Avila

Start with Bossuet's "Politics Drawn from the Very Words of Holy Scripture," a masterpiece on this exact subject.  Then go to the Angelic Doctor's "On Kingship."

When is your assignment due ?  If you don't have the time or money to acquire and then read both of these, maybe I could think of something else to help you out.

    Pax Christi.

    Bossuet :

Saint Thomas : [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/088355772X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=088355772X&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwchanco-20 Kingship, to the King of Cyprus

I'm doing the course independently, and my teacher has been quite accommodating over my topics and due dates, however I would want to get another essay into her in the next three weeks; however I have mid- terms this week, so it's highly unlikely I'll get any serious research or writing done before Friday.

I've looked into Bossuet's book, and some of St. Thomas' works, although it would take about three weeks to a month for either to arrive if I ordered them. So if you could think of any other sources, I would be most ingratiated to you!

    What about expedited shipping ?

Otherwise, there are probably essays on the subject that could be found on academic databases like JSTOR or Questia that you could use.  Perhaps go to the Political Science and Mediaeval History sections of the library, too (I am assuming that you are at a university or college of some kind).

  • Actually I'm just a high school student. Although the university's library is both extensive and largely open to the public, so it's likely I'll find sources on the matter there. And thank you for suggesting those two elibraries, I just had a quick look through them and they seem most useful!

  • You might find something of use from Kenelm Henry Digby's book: The Broad Stone of Honour.

You can find it here at http://www.archive.org/details/broadstonehonou04digbgoog
