  • What does the "reputation" rating mean on the left hand side-bar?  How is it earned?

  • It's like a video game score. It shows how much time your wasting on here.

Just post/BS often and it'll increase to your satisfaction.

I'm relatively new to the forum so I'm naively confused about your meaning.  May I ask if you could flesh out your reply a bit?
So far, I've enjoyed many of the topics, and have benefited greatly by many of the links and information (library). Some members invest painstaking time to provide translations, etc. for our edification.
Conversely, a few topics are sophomoric and/or overrun by those not well schooled in the true faith (more "neo - traddish" and nationalistic if you will).

    Thank you for your time!

  • Ok, I'll give the definitive answer --

The reputation score starts out at 10 for every new member. When someone "upvotes" your post, you get 1 reputation point. When someone "downvotes" your post, you lose 1/3 of 1 point.

The little "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" smilie appears at the top of every post.

If you want to see more posts like this, click the Thumbs Up.
If you don't like the post, click the Thumbs Down.

PLEASE NOTE: You are NOT voting for what you think of the information. If someone posted a news article about Bishop Williamson being put on trial in Germany, I would certainly up-vote the post -- saying "thanks for the information!" -- even though I would be VERY UNHAPPY about +W being put on trial. Long story short, Don't shoot the messenger. It hurts his/her reputation score if you downvote.

A few other things to note:

    1. The more you post, the higher your rep score is likely to be (unless you GROSSLY don't fit in here).
    2. It's worthwhile to post in controversial threads, even when they're divided 50/50. Fans of your position will up-vote you, and "the other side" will likely downvote you. But 10 UP and 10 DOWN does *not* equal zero. You would net 7 points. (See above: a down-vote only costs you 1/3 of a point!)
    3. By up-voting and down-voting, you help to encourage the kind of posts you'd like to see on CathInfo. Don't let all the OTHER people vote for what they want -- let your voice be heard! Unlike the U.S. national elections, your vote actually DOES matter here. We're a pretty small group.

That's just how many posts you've made. There are only 5 "levels" so it doesn't tell you much.

  • Thanks for clearing that up.  I've often looked at those numbers but never asked before this.

  • The most important number is the number of members who hate your contributions so much they put you on "ignore." I only have two but I'm working on it.  :laugh1:

  • Thanks for starting this topic Marsha.
What happens if you put someone on ignore?
I've never tried it and I haven't felt the strong urge, yet!
Looks like you would be the best person to try it out on, Roland, eh?
If I put Roland on ignore, can I take him off again?

Yes. Press the "Hide" next to someone's username, and you will see that they've posted in a certain thread, you just won't be able to read their post. You can take them on and off ignore as much as you'd like.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

All you see when you place someone on "ignore" is their name and a gray box that hides the contents of their post. You can take it off my selecting "view post."

Yes I have a few people on ignore so that's how I know.

You can keep me on ignore though; you aren't missing much  :dancing:

    Um... or, or...

Butcher up some of your most precious, rare and beloved books, take the time to scan them after a day of work and traffic, take more time to edit them, fork over some money to host and upload them somewhere, and post them here exclusively on CathInfo according to the exigencies of circuмstance (i.e., the occasion of Sundays, Feasts, &c.) or to fulfill public or private requests (such as prayer requests).

But I don't seem to "score" on such threads or replies as much as others who don't take hours to go through the same process in order to post a thread or reply to a posted thread.

Not that I care, 'cos I am not doing it to "score." I have finally found a way to multiply my books and share them with others who may benefit therefrom and avail themselves of their pages perhaps better than I myself ever could, and that makes waking up everyday to a life that seems to be the pointless sum of days and weeks and months living from pay check cash payment to pay check cash payment as a day-laborer -- whose baccalaureate diploma ended up torn to pieces in the garbage bin after he realized that he has no "great expectations" or "bright future" and that he may end up as an exhausted old man found dead in some lonesome apartment weeks after an uneventful death sometime in the distant(?) future -- all the more bearable.

If I could make one other person love God a little more, even for a moment, then everything I have endured throughout my life would have been worth it, and I would do it all over again if only for that single soul if I had to.

  • For what it's worth, I pretty much reflexively upthumb your posts.  I am waiting to get that annoying "I am sure Hobble appreciates the support but let's give someone else a chance" message.
