  • I have to admit, that the changes using this new platform have been the easiest changes to adjust to.  This transition has been done well, Matthew. ;D
I hope everyone realizes that this operation was done for "health" rather than "cosmetic" reasons. I am not the type of person to change for the sake of change. The fact that this (first) upgrade brings us from 2006 all the way to 2017 shows just how often I like to shake things up.

Staying on an obsolete platform can be very dangerous -- especially for those 480,000 posts made over the past 11 years. We don't want them lost.

Eventually something happens that forces you to upgrade -- search engine policies, changes to PHP (the main programming language for websites), user trends (1/2 of web traffic is now from mobile devices), etc.

For example, the old CathInfo needed a very old version of PHP to run properly. And Google was beginning to give CathInfo demerits for being "non-mobile friendly".

    Quote
According to SimilarWeb’s State of Mobile Web US 2015 report, roughly 56 percent of consumer traffic to the leading US websites is now from mobile devices. Mobile traffic in Q4 was roughly 49 percent, on average, for these top sites.
The report is based on the company’s analysis of the top 10,000 US websites in 24 categories. It does not include app usage. The following are the top 10 mobile traffic site categories, with the top five are receiving at least 60 percent of their traffic from mobile devices.

  • I have to report that when you create a new topic, the "Description" that is optional, doesn't actually show on the thread when you commit it to posting. It simply doesn't show.
    I knew about this one.
I think the theme I'm using ignores that field for some reason, even though it's stored, and it's "available" so to speak.

  • I am being frustrated when I post two or more paragraphs, the system auto-deletes the space between the paragraphs making my post into a run-on mess that's very hard to read.

So I then have to go back to separate them, which is a pain. I have resorted to starting out with 3 return strokes between the first two paragraphs then clicking Preview, before proceeding. So far that's doing the trick, but it's not so easy to remember to add two extra Return strokes every time I start writing a post. Too often I forget to add them because I'm thinking about what I'm typing instead of what goofy gimmick I need to observe, to get the post to look like what I expect to see automatically

This is a known bug, and one that I've reported to the author. However, said author released a new version yesterday, which was specifically supposed to fix that problem *and nothing else* and he insists it's fixed.
I carefully installed it, but the problem seems to remain here on CathInfo. Stay tuned.

  • Things seem to be running pretty smoothly. Just a few additional ideas that probably are a problem only for me. Maybe these are some problems only because of some personal settings I have.

The home page is clear, but as I drill deeper into a post, it gets a little confusing. It's as if nothing lines up correctly because every item seems to meld into others on the look of the page. Sorry if I'm being confusing, but for example quoted material doesn't stand out as clearly as on the original software. In fact, I can't look at the whole page and easily tell where one post ends and a new post begins. I can't tell whether the "like" buttons belong to a post, or the one below it. Some additional lines might keep everything neat, but also make it look too old fashioned.
I'm also not a fan of the ellipses being added on such a short field. It seems like it would be easier to spot a post's subject if it went on for a few more words.

Is there a key to the yellow and blue balloons? I can't find a place that explains what they mean.
And lastly, are there any ways to figure out the threads that one has participated in like the black dot on the old software?

  • Just to elaborate one small bit, and then I'll go on to my prayers. On the line thing in the posts: when I open up a particular thread I see posts that start with bold print "Re: The subject" and then the reply number. Then a thin line.
To my warped sense of perception it would make more sense to put the line ABOVE the subject and reply number data, thus closing off the business of the last post and signaling everything below pertains to another post. As it is I tend to see the line as pushing the last post to a closing to show where the new post begins when actually both sides of the line contain information is part of the new post.  OK, I'm going to stop thinking about it now.

  • I mostly use my iPad when posting here and I've noticed that, when typing, it lags and guesses words incorrectly, so you can't really type fast because you're left with isolated letters or totally different words.

  • I'm continuing to have several problems.
    .

The space between paragraphs continues to disappear even with Preview, therefore I have resorted to inserting a period between paragraphs, which see -- it has been working okay but it looks goofy.
    .

The numbered list feature and bullet list feature do not work at all:
    • I typed this as the first bullet item, but the bullet only is visible in my first copy
    • This is the second bullet item but this bullet will likewise disappear with Preview and Post.
    .

Yes, as soon as I hit Preview, the copy above no longer has the two bullet items as I see them here.
    .

    • This is the first item on a numbered list
    • This is the second item on a numbered list
    • This is the third item
    • When I hit Preview, I expect them to become phrases without periods at the end
    • As expected, I just tried Preview, and yes, the numbers 1-5 are all missing.
    .

When I copy portions of a page from another website, a whole host of problems are introduced.
    .

When the other website has a bullet or numbered list, the bullets or numbers do not appear here.
    .

When the other website material has rows or columns in Format, the rows and columns are approximately kept in this site, however, various inconsistencies are introduced which I have been unable to modify or correct. I have tried copying the material into a Word docuмent and re-formating the material but have not had much luck with that. I have tried using the "Remove Formatting" button on this site but it generally does not remove the formatting.
    .

I'm having other problems but perhaps this is enough for the moment. Thank you, Matthew.

  • I am already used to the new site. I think it is an improvement. But there is one problem I am having. I can not figure out how to ignore users like you could in the old site so you could hide the posts from certain users.
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • I noticed that when I access the site and post using my Kindle Fire tablet, I am presented with the advanced form with all the buttons and smiles, but when I access the site and post from my Ubuntu desktop/Firefox I don't have that; all I get is the raw text response window with not smilies or buttons for formatting. Both have their pros and cons, but it is not consistent.

As well, when I use the advanced posting form, it is not consistent is paragraph spacing, and I am forced to MODIFY my post after posting, to insert more space between paragraphs to make it look decent.

This is 100% an iOS (Apple's operating system) issue. It has nothing to do with the CathInfo software. CathInfo doesn't communicate with iOS regarding "auto suggest" and stuff like that. That is something Apple does completely on its own.

  • It sounds like the remaining bugs are all related to the Advanced Editor which is a plug-in I paid for.
I don't have access to the source code, so I can't fix anything. All I can do is report bugs and hope they fix them.

Neil Obstat, everything you listed is related to this editor. So I can't fix any of the things you mentioned.

I can promise you, though, that I will keep the editor up-to-date with the latest version, especially during the 1 year of updates I'm entitled to.

The "missing spaces between paragraphs" is annoying me too. I just bugged the author again yesterday about it. They really need to get it fixed, and for real this time.

    .
    Okay. I understand.
    .
One more thing, if it comes up in your discussions with the supplier: If they have any add-on feature that would make INDENTATION possible that would be nice. Perhaps we could indent the first line of whole paragraphs, which could be a work-around for the losing paragraph spacing problem.
    .
But in the best case, we could indent whole paragraphs to set excerpted material apart when it's from off-site so we don't have to worry about linking to a previous post since it didn't come from a previous post.

  • When you click on a topic, is there anyway to make each sub topic row a bit 'thinner' or 'less wide'?  There seems to be a lot of space in between each topic.  If you got rid of some of it, you'd be able to see more topics per page and not have to scroll as much.  For example:

    Main Topic:  General Discussion
    Sub Topics:
    1.  Report any bugs or issues with new site...

    2.  Topic 2

    3.  Topic 3

    4.  Topic 4

    Proposed new layout:
    Main Topic:  General Discussion
    Sub Topics:
    1.  Report any bugs or issues with new site...
    2.  Topic 2
    3.  Topic 3
    4.  Topic 4
