  • I am unable to see the new CI on my phone. It tells me the connection is not private, that attackers could steal information from this page.

    Any suggestions?
First of all, excuse me a minute while I scream in frustration.

    :really-mad2: :cussing:

Ok, now that that's taken care of...

Long story short, "secure site" was going to be MY argument. I got the site 100% switched over to SSL (https://) including all the component parts (site graphics, banners, avatars, etc.) Now if someone embeds images from an unsecured site (like the recent post from Sean Johnson's blog) then I can't really help that.

But, #!?@ it, a couple of unencrypted GRAPHICS on an encrypted page is not a security risk! At all! I don't care what any of those morons say.

As a corollary, https:// doesn't solve every security issue. It's not the be-all and end-all, as they pretend.

I just spent a half a day buying, installing, and configuring SSL for CathInfo ("a secure connection") so all the browsers could stop their b*tching about CathInfo being a risk to life, limb, and property. The risk is not as bad as those idiotic warnings would have you believe. People used to browse sites in regular (unencrypted) mode all the time. Unless you're transmitting sensitive information, you're fine.

In reality, in the wild, people do "unsafe" things all the time and get away with it. You'd be shocked how many times people have sent me credit card information over plain text (unencrypted) e-mail! It's just like driving without a seatbelt, riding a bike without a helmet, or sending cash through the mail. You can easily get away with it 99.999% of the time. It's just not the *safest* way.

People are obsessed with being safe these days. Maybe it's because they're not in the state of grace and they fear the afterlife. They also fear the cross. They want to control every aspect of their life, to prevent God from allowing ANY crosses in their path. Being fearful to step outside your door -- what's the point of living if that's how you're going to live?

  • Okay, cleared the history, now I get the unsecured message at initial sign in, not after every page.
    This baffles me too.

For the first day, this was true. But then I installed a redirect in Apache (.htaccess, for the nerds out there), so even the FIRST VISIT is auto-redirected to https://www.cathinfo.com if your browser, link, bookmark etc. initially took you to the unencrypted http://www.cathinfo.com

But the .htaccess is on the SERVER end, so it shouldn't matter what browser or operating system you're using! That's why I, an Internet user since 1996, a PC tech since 1997, and a computer programmer since 1998 am quite baffled by this report.

I'll test it out on my Android tablet later, and get back to you.

Um, yes, agree that "it shouldn't".

But have you ruled out the possibility that popular browsers have been revised--very recently--to include oppressively aggressive  nanny features that now refuse to transmit "HTTP GET" to a server, whenever the URL isn't to an "https" URL, which of course, is before Apache can even get its hands on the URL to redirect it?   It'd be [expletives deleted] obnoxious, but it fits the described behavior.

    -------
Note #: Aha!  I just noticed that the new 'quote' syntax uses "author="; no wonder my hacked syntax based on the MercuryBoard CathInfo failed to produce clickable links in its 'quote' header-stripes.

  • The security is a non-issue for me.  As was pointed out earlier, even if someone got a hold of a user's CI credentials, what's going to happen?  They're not tied in any way at all to finances or even to identity.  The only possible safety concern is if one was sending extremely sensitive information via PM, and if you're doing that, you probably deserve to be hacked :D

What is concerning me at the moment is the fact that line breaks in replies don't seem to take. If I preview a post, most line breaks are removed; then if I go back and edit it, they're gone.  Not a huge deal but am looking forward to resolution.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

The line breaks are removed in posts like this one, where I'm quoting someone. I have the problem well-defined, and 100% reproducible. In other words, it's halfway to being fixed. I'm talking to the vendor about it now. The posts editor is the one thing I paid money for.

  • Ok, Android users (I am one myself!) you are good to go.

Apparently I did a bad job installing the SSL certificate. It worked in SOME browsers but not ALL of them. I think it's fixed now.

I'm glad you let me know. A huge % of people browse websites with phones and tablets. And Android is a very popular platform (as a matter of fact, I'm rooting for Android over iOS).

If anyone else has problems regarding "security warnings", please let me know. Although they are frustrating (for me and for you), it's best for me to know about them, so I can deal with them -- if I can.

Again, to recap: I tested CathInfo on my Android tablet, and it basically told me the SSL certificate was invalid. Once I fixed the problem and tried again, the site loaded perfectly with no warnings, and the little green padlock.

    Problem solved.

A big THANK YOU to Cantarella and Jovita for bringing this problem to my attention.

    Thank you
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • there is no way to edit anymore!

Even with Jesus, we are still human
    1. Edit is now called "modify". It is in the bar above your post.

    2. Yes there is a 5 minute time limit on editing your own posts, but that time limit has been in place since 2007 or so. So that's nothing new on CathInfo.

  • minor issue. I noticed on this thread the thumbs up is active but here https://www.cathinfo.com/anonymous-posts-allowed/can-repressed-feelings-cause-cancer-or/
    I could thumb up.
Being able to up/down thumb "Guest" (or the owner of Anonymous posts) was a feature unique to the old CathInfo. It's something I realize was less than logical, so I let the new behavior stand.

I'd have to program around it, if I wanted to preserve that behavior. But the fact that the new software does it this way suggests it's more normal.

  • I have to admit, that the changes using this new platform have been the easiest changes to adjust to.  This transition has been done well, Matthew. ;D

  • Matthew,

I think the changes you have made to the forum are such a great improvement! Previously, I found it very difficult to read and hard to negotiate.
    Well done! :applause: :applause:

  • One of the problems I see is the standard font size. Unless one changes the font size to three, it appears at size one which is tiny to me at least.

    Many thanks

You were right about the font size.
    I fixed it.
You will probably have to "clear your browser cache" before you'll get the new layout (i.e., the larger font).

  • I have to report that when you create a new topic, the "Description" that is optional, doesn't actually show on the thread when you commit it to posting. It simply doesn't show.
"there can be no holiness where there is disagreement with the pope" - Pope St. Pius X

Today, only Catholics holding the sedevacantist position are free from the anguish entailed by this truth.
