  • I will do my best to get all the kinks worked out of the new site.

With any project this complex, there are GOING to be oversights as well as bugs.

Please post your reports in this thread only -- please do not create a new topic for every oddity you notice!

  • What about requesting enhancements or other changes that--strictly phrased--are not reports about bugs or other problems?

Should those also be submitted to this topic, or would you prefer a separate topic?

Moderator answer: Yes, please post them here.

  • As a dinosaur, I miss the simplicity of CIF over the last few years. I am overwhemned by the words, numbers and signs everywhere. Hope I can get used to them.

With any project this complex, there are GOING to be oversights as well as bugs.

I see an unfavorable design-change: HTML entity-codes (i.e., ugly tokens in the form "&#dddd;" are actually converted to the corresponding UTF-8 characters in each cycle of using preview, instead of being left as-is for the CathInfo-reader's browser to figure out & display.

    This means that
    · I lose track of where I've placed no-break-space (& # 160), used for visually gluing a separating blank between characters (e.g., the papal name of a pope and the ordinal number for his name), which I assume is caused by SMF treating no-break-space as whitespace undistinguished from any other; and
    · I lose my most common reference-marks, which I customarily enclose by brackets, e.g., "[ # ]", "[ * ]" and "[ + ]", all of which disappear in the actual posting, because they are instances of BB-Code syntax[**] that, altho' common elsewhere, wasn't usable on the MercuryBoard CathInfo.

It's the conflict with the common and recognizable bracket ('[' and ']') convention for nontypeset references to notes, used with the customary reference-marks '*', '†', '‡', or more readily available '#', '$', '+', which makes me strongly prefer braces ('{' and '}') as the delimiters for BB-Code.  I've seen PERL code for an early wiki (Ward Cunningham's?) in which braces-vs.-brackets is a webmaster-configurable option.  Might it also be so in the SimpleMachines Forum source-code?

The possibility that modern keyboards specialized for certain widespread overseas languages, e.g.: German, might still not have such symbols, might be the only potentially compelling reason for continuing to tolerate the conflict with the bracketed note-reference syntax.  Altho' it's well past time to apply the ALT keys to their originally intended use, such that, e.g., left-paren ('(')+ALT yields left-brace ('{'), and left-bracket ('[')+ALT yields left-angle-bracket (Misc. Tech. '〈' or Math-A '⟨').

I suppose you can simply present the new syntax as an enhancement to CathInfo that's built in to SMF, which is how it will seem to most CathInfo members.  But you really ought to provide a few pinned informational topics, including 1 for BB-Code syntax processed by SMF.  In the technically oriented opinion of someone who recognizes that he's not the owner-moderator-webmaster, of course.

    -------
Note **: Syntax for bulleted list-items, numbered list-items, and I suppose, another kind of list-items that I don't recall.  I also don't recall the syntax for beginning and ending the lists.

As a person halfway to dino-hood, I sympathize. I am only 40, but I already am quite set in my ways in many things. I'm hating change more and more, though I'm trying to fight it.
But as I said in my post, "Why I decided to upgrade CathInfo", I didn't want to lose all the 11 years of posts because I stuck with obsolete software for too long. I didn't want to be the only person using Mercuryboard -- then I'd have to write a conversion script myself, and it might never happen.
Already, the old software was missing many expected features for a forum in 2017, including MOBILE FRIENDLINESS. Do you know that almost 1/3 of traffic to CathInfo comes from mobile devices? Also, a few months ago Google began penalizing websites that aren't mobile friendly. So I had to get with the times, pain or no pain.
Long story short, I wanted CathInfo to have a future. I also didn't want to scare away a new generation of Traditional Catholics by using software that made "Traditional Catholics" seem obsolete. I didn't want to send a false message.

  • Have only been using the new site for maybe five minutes, so nothing to report-- except-- the bold used by both you and Alligator Dicax seems a bit underwhelming.  I see as I'm composing this reply that the preview uses a strong, black color for the font but as I view both of your replies, it is a rather weak-grey color.
    This problem has been fixed!

To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • The "Unread Posts" option on the Homescreen doesn't lead me to unread posts, but to "Recent Unread Topics", an option that already exists in the menu bar.

Would be nice to have an option that takes you to the first unread post of every updated thread since the last login. A feature I missed very much with the old software.

Problems solved! No need to answer to my previous post.
(I got the difference between "Recent Topics" and "Recent Unread Topics" and i noticed the function of the "new" button(?))
    Super forum update, Matthew :applause:

  • I liked how the old site standardized image sizes so that you didn't have to worry about the size of your image before posting.

  • Since there's not a "suggestions" thread, I'll put this here.

With the "old" CI, my main complaint was that there was no "unread posts" or "replies to threads you're participating in" filter. There was the "new posts" filter which didn't take into account whether or not you'd read it.

But I think the current state of this smf incarnation is actually worse. You get a "feed" of new posts, and it's not very long-- maybe ten. And if there's a hot topic (like...Drumroll....feeneyism!) Then the feed is just populated by the most recent posts for that thread, and not infrequently (such as tonight) many may even be by the same poster.

Obviously it's day one so I'm not too worried, but this is definitely something that needs attention. As is, the "new posts" feed is pretty useless. It *should* be a way for people to get a general overview of recent forum activity, but it isn't.

Why not just use (what I believe is the default for smf) the unread posts/new posts to your topics dynamic (as seen on most "out of the box" smf boards)?

  • The mobile use is marginally better than before, but I won't be ditching my PC anytime soon.

It kept all the off-site ones, but the uploaded ones all got junked, I think.
Yes, I would replace your avatar. You can upload one, or use an image from somewhere on the Net.

  • Good news! The edit function now works. The edit function, as usual, only works for 5 minutes after you make a post.

  • The space between paragraphs are sometimes lost. They are present when typing but once it gets posted the gap disappears sometimes.

  • Please see the attached screenshot.

This is an example of how the new posts feed looks.  Unless I'm actually involved in whatever's been happening on the forum over the last hour or so, it isn't useful at all to know that Stubborn and Ladislas have been posting away about BOD.  I already knew that (LOL).  In the old CI, you'd be able to simply see a list of the topics that had been most recently posted in; that's far more useful than this very detailed view, which is only going to be helpful to those who are already involved in whatever topics happen to be featured in the feed.

It certainly doesn't give someone an overview of what's being discussed on the forum over the last, say, twenty-four (or even twelve) hours.  Which I would imagine is somewhat the point of such a feature.

I'd suggest using the default schema (at least I think it's default) that one finds on (*gulp*) Fisheaters and Suscipe Domine.  I.e., there is a link to see "unread posts" and a link to see "recent replies to your posts."  These links are usually placed prominently in the UI.  Or, to change the content of the current feed to be more like the previous CI, at least inasmuch as it provided a higher-level overview of forum activity (even if it doesn't take into account what you have already read).

"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation.
