• As some of you know from the post in the Are looks important topic here...http://www.cathinfo.com/index.php?a=topic&t=33157&min=90&num=5
(Page 19 third post down) I am I guess you would say in the process of getting to know a young woman who has addiction issues. She has been clean for a few months now and just recently was released from jail. Of course her conditions of release involve not using drugs or alcohol. She doesn't have an alcohol problem but it's standard for the no alcohol clause to be in the contract.

Her drug of choice was percocet. I don't know if she was just taking more than was prescribed or if she was buying it on the street. She is definitely serious about getting counseling and going to NA meetings to help stay off this stuff. She also is moving far away from where she was using to get away from all the people and places where she had her issues.

She had a touch childhood growing up. It sounds like her parents aren't together anymore and her dad is an alcoholic. I took her to get her clothing from her dad's house which was about a 45 minute ride each way. She sounds like she is serious about wanting to become a Catholic but the problem she has is she doesn't have a car and I live about an hour away from her so it would be hard to pick her up on Sunday's. She really needs a Church she can walk to for now and even the NO Church that's near her is only open during the summers.

She also has some of the same mental health issues as I do so we get each other which helps out. We both agree with what the "experts" say about addicts and relationships that we should at least wait a year of sobriety before getting serious. But we still want to hang out and get to know each other.

Anyway...to change the subject...she told me some crazy things she found out in jail. A new way people are getting high is people are now smoking bedbugs. That's right...I looked it up and it's true! That's just disgusting...

She also said some girl got in trouble for smoking orange peels. I guess the white inner part of the orange peel is like tobacco if you smoke it. They also don't give you banana peels...just chunks of bananas without the peels because if you smoke the inner part of the banana peel it's causes you to have hallucinations. I just can't help thinking where these people come up with this crazy stuff.

Anyway...I know this is a high risk "relationship" and there is a lot that can go wrong but I think if we take things slow and I can help her join the Church and be a friend to help her stay clean then we will see where things go. I also know I will have to be very careful as things proceed.

• That reinforces a recent conversation about innocence being underrated, even among Catholics. You have to know evil to some degree in order to be prudent and protect yourself and your family from it. But so much of it is superfluous information that does nothing but put weird ideas into your head that wouldn't otherwise be there. Who thinks of smoking bedbugs? Really, WHO thinks of this? Such stupidity. Yet also such creativity and ingenuity totally squandered. Imagine if these people put forth such effort towards good!

• Yes, and I have a helicopter ride into the eye of a hurricane that I'd like to sell you.
What part of "your hanging over the cliff by your finger nails and calling for a manicurist" do you not find understandable?

You also share the same mental problems? Wow. I'm speechless.

Set her up to see a reputable priest then move as far away from her as you can: Tierra del Fuego, Ice Station Zebra.

Quote
And Jesus answering, said to him: It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

•  :fryingpan:
My cousin married a man she met in the day room of a mental hospital.  Needless to say, the marriage failed, but first they conceived a child who is now an adult resident of a mental institution.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

• You can't help her stay clean. If you are even gonna think about perusing this relationship I want to suggest Alanon. YOU have nothing to do with the addiction and You have nothing to do with their recovery. Unless you learn about addiction, etc I'm afraid you may actually enable her. So learn about it, get to an alanon meeting and see if you are ready for this.

• I can't help think this might be trolling post as the OP has stirred things up before.

It would be nice to have a discussion about people who are substance abusers.

I actually do know a lot about addiction as my dad was a recovering alcoholic with over 30 years sobriety before he died.
