  • The average temperature for December 24th in my part of Texas:

    High 59
    Low 39

    Today's weather
    High 76
    Low 66

    It's currently 75.6 degrees out.

    So...

Frugal persons can forget about leaving the HEAT off...on a day like today, they have to hold back from turning on the AIR CONDITIONING!

I'm sure many people have their A/C on today and/or tonight. When the low is in the high 60's, it's hard to get comfortable in the house (which is in the mid 70's, even with the windows open). Whatever the temp is outside, it's always 8 degrees warmer in our house.

It sure doesn't feel like Christmas -- I can tell you that much!

  • I also noticed that my old hometown in N. Illinois is going to get 1/3 an inch of RAIN on Christmas Day.  This is a place that has a White Christmas at least 9 years out of 10 -- maybe more.

    Wow...

That solar, cyclical global warming is something else!

  • I decided to check out the centigrade equivalent of 75.6 F. It's around 24.2 degrees which is the same temperature as was in our lounge room Christmas mid-morning. We can have sweltering temperatures at Christmas, but for us it was perfect eating weather. Thank God! It's always a relief to have a coolish Christmas.

You're in the Southern hemisphere though -- Australia. It's supposed to be Summer down there on December 25 :)

  • Yes it is. 24 degrees C is a beautiful simmer's Summer's day! (The strike-through was a typo which I thought apt.) We always welcome a cool day at Christmas. 24C is cool for us.

You're turning on the air conditioner for 80 degree weather?  That is utterly ridiculous.

That's 26.67 °C! What wimps! Too much money to throw around!

I didn't own either of the homes/buildings that hosted our two family get-togethers over Christmas weekend.

I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate me messing with their thermostat and/or opening up their windows! hahaha

And 80 can indeed be quite uncomfortable, when the humidity is high and you are moving around a lot. It depends on the person.

Right now, with the humidity, we are experiencing a "heat index", which is similar to a Wind Chill up north. It is currently 80.5, "feels like 84". That means that human beings can consider, for all practical purposes, that it IS indeed 84 degrees outside. If you're a thermometer or a plate of water, then it's still just 80.5.

Also, some people simply never open their windows. (We are the exact opposite -- we open them every chance we get) So if they're having 30 people over, plus a few other heat sources, you have to do something to deal with it all. Each person generates 100W of heat, plus human respiration adds humidity as well.

I did not intend to suggest that it was your air conditioner since you noted that the air conditioning was running at the two parties you attended.

But I agree with Nadir:  Your friends have way too much money to throw around if they run the air at such temperatures.
