  • What was the reason behind the bubonic plague? Who sent it? If it was God what do you think may have been his reasons?

It was what caused the collapse of the Feudal system and recent discoveries showed that it seemed to be similar to the Ebola disease. Wiped out 2/3rds of Europe.

  • The plague then mysteriously disappeared after 1670.

Man is in constant need of chastisement. God chastises us with wars, famines, diseases, etc. Now He has seen fit to chastise us with a "Catholic" hierarchy that is anything but Catholic. I take that as a sign that we are on the verge of His final chastisement.

Don't waste time and effort on idle speculation. Pray and fast and meditate on the Four Last Things.

  • Bubonic plague is caused by infected fleas riding upon rats. Bad sanitation and lack of understanding allowed it to spread. But I now see your question is larger than that easy explanation. So I add- God allowed it.

It most certainly did not.  There was an outbreak in northern Europe in the early 18th Century that killed thousands, including the majority of the inhabitants of Helsinki.  There was a further outbreak in Marseille in 1720.  There were over sixty outbreaks in Constantinople during the 18th Century.  There was an epidemic in the mid 19th Century that started in China and killed millions.  There was even an outbreak in San Francisco in the early 20th Century.  People still get Bubonic Plague to this day, although modern medicine is able to treat it an modern sanitation keeps cases low.

  • Plagues, illnesses, wars, famines etc are part of life in a fallen world.

If God is sending all these wars, famines, plagues as so-called 'chastisements', they don't seem to be very effective in changing human behaviour.

  • I reckon God sent the plague in order to punish Europe for questioning - Why He sent the Mongol Horde?

  • 'We must all strive to be intimately convinced that everything which happens by chance or accident, as a great drought, too much rain, pestilence, famine, and the like, does not happen without the special Providence and will of God, and consequently we should not complain of the elements, or of God Himself, but should regard evils of this kind as a scourge with which God punishes us for our sins, and bowing ourselves beneath His Almighty hand, bear everything in humility and patience. God will thus be appeased. He will scatter His benedictions upon us. He will chastise us as His sons with a fatherly love, and will not deprive us of the kingdom of heaven.'

    St. Robert Bellarmine

  • The Mongolians brought it.
