  • No, he does not look cuddly.  He looks like a cardinal.  and a much thinner cardinal, at that.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • Thanks for posting this picture.  He looks italian and in that picture and he looks dignified to me.  Actually refreshing, because Novus Ordo often makes priests, bishops and cardinals seem inappropriately undignified/"accessible."  As if there is "NO" difference between them and anyone else.

Except that isn't how he presented himself just days ago. That seemed more like the "accessible" NO type.
It would be comparatively easy for us to be holy if only we could always see the character of our neighbours either in soft shade or with the kindly deceits of moonlight upon them. Of course, we are not to grow blind to evil

Looks like the 80's. Not all of the traditional garb was cast aside by the 80's, and it is also put on for show sometimes these days. He still has that ugly pectoral cross.

I think it looks like an outtake of a photo shoot.

The text mentions 1992 and I think it may be when he was elevated to Cardinal in 2001.

  • Please don't post things like this.  My cat already is arrogant enough without thinking that ascending to the Throne of St. Peter is a possibility.  I can see it now,  "I declare by my infallible teaching authority that Sigismund is eternally damned for not feeding me tuna five times a day.  Anathema Sit!"

I agree, however I can just imagine now their thinking...It seems there is a tiny image of a lamb, next "pretender" will change it to a goat, and so on, and so on, and so on.

Can't see it to well, perhaps it is a goat already!

Actually, Pope Francis is using the Papal staff used by popes Pius XII and John XXIII, which is similar to the papal staff used by Pope Pius IX.Pope Benedict XVI revived this papal staff during his pontificate, a vast improvement over the ugly bent crucifix used by Paul VI and John Paul II

Starting from His Holiness Pope Innocent III, the popes in the Middle Ages used a papal staff with three bars, the three bars representing  the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Three Divine Persons of the One True God.

  • The three barred Papal Cross:

For comparison, the archiepiscopal cross, or archbishop's cross:

Interestingly enough, there is a photo of John Paul II using the three barred papal staff
