Reading the Bible while smoking

  • 99% of the time that I smoke, I am always reading something on my iPad, whether it's a PDF or something online, or listening to something. I rarely just smoke and do nothing else at the same time.

So I have the original 16th century Douay in my iPad, but i have always refrained from reading it while I smoke. I don't know if it may be a bad thing so that's why I haven't done it.

But if there's nothing wrong with it then I would start reading it while I smoke.

Has anyone ever done this? What about old time people with their pipes? I wonder if they ever read the Bible while smoking their pipe.

Note: I smoke cigarettes, not with a pipe.

  • Do you know the old Jesuit joke?

May I smoke while I pray? No.
May I pray while I smoke? Yes.

  • Smoke 'me if you got 'em.

I would recommend that you switch to pipe smoking, but if you enjoy cigarettes, then have at it.

When holding a physical Bible, be careful when holding a lit match and don't let the ashes fall on the page.

Maybe I heard it once a long time ago.

    What does it mean? No?

If it were a physical one, maybe I never would, but since it's digital, it feels different for me.

  • I have a pipe sometimes while reading holy books, commentary or otherwise. I'm sure I've read scripture doing so.

I definitely have a little scotch in the evening and read, that reading would be whatever I'm reading at the time: Gwynne's Latin, City of God, Pre VII encyclicals, or Scripture.

I'm not sure I see the conflict

As a former smoker of pipes and cigarettes, I would recommend that anyone who wants to smoke should try smoking out of pipes and not cigarettes. I thoroughly enjoyed smoking out of pipes much more than smoking out of cigarettes. I prefered smoking out of corn cob pipes over the wooden ones I tried but I enjoyed both more than cigarettes.

Please pray for the repose of my soul.

A Jesuit and a Dominican were talking.  The Dominican says that he asked his superior if he could smoke while he prays and was told that it would not be appropriate.  The Jesuit tells him he asked the wrong question.  He should have asked if he could pray when he was smoking.

In your case, No.  You should not smoke while you're reading your bible.

On the other hand, if you would like to read your bible while you're smoking, that would be ok.

  • Better to smoke here than in the hereafter.

  • I think what the OP is really asking is - is it an extra venial sin to read the bible WHILE sinning venially.

Smoking isn't necessarily a sin if done in moderation, so if one is smoking in moderation, then there would be no extra sin by reading the bible doing so.

However, if one is addicted to the pleasure beyond reason (or harming health or giving scandal), I think there would be extra venial sin to be doing so while reading the bible, akin to the principle that if you venially sin on a Sunday or Holy Day of obligation, the sin is more offensive to God (though never turning a venial sin into a mortal sin).

  • I don't see a problem with it, personally. I'm a pipe smoker and I often read while smoking, I don't see a problem with it being the bible that I'm reading whilst smoking. I wouldn't smoke whilst doing meditations on scriptural verses or praying the Rosary, though.
