    No, not exactly.

  • I have a lot of them.  I began reading them when I was first coming out of the fog, at around 23/24.  I used to order boxes at a time.  Now, it is only on occasion that I buy one.  I still read and re-read quite a few, though.

  • We have a bunch, but I suppose you could guess that it might be a good idea for a TAN employee to have access to the books.   :reading:

For those who aren't on the TAN email list, this summer is a great time to buy many of their books. They're having a series of 50% off sales as they reduce inventory in preparation for having to rent warehouse space as the company continues to reorganize.

  • Almost every book I have is a TAN Book. As far as content and value for money goes they are the best. The problem is the quality. The standard of manufacture is fairly poor. I recieved "Devotion To The Sacred Heart" the other day. As usual it is a great read but not very well assembled.

I definately recomend TAN books for content and value. Open them past 90 degrees and it's all over.

The saddest thing is that (to the best of my knowledge) their printing equipment was auctioned off two weeks ago and they will no longer print their own books. This is disapointing because the books might become unavailable.

As nearly every book I have is from TAN, I wonder what is going to happen.

Well, if they auction off their book-binding equipment, it might be a move in the right direction.

Great books - shoddy construction (and too high a price for it).

To my knowledge, they are getting rid of the majority (if not ALL) of their equipment, so the binding should indeed improve!  My source sounds shady, but I heard this from a friend of a friend (at an Eastern Rite parish) who is related to the Vice Prez or something?  I forget the details of the connections because it has definitely been quite a while since I had heard the news (and I didn't exactly feel the need to take notes of the conversation at the time).

So, yes, hopefully the binding will get MUCH better!

  • The binding problem was fixed in 1997 or so.

The problem is, many OLDER or slower-moving books had 15 years of stock already in existence. Because the presses would otherwise be idle, for economy of scale, etc. books were printed in HUGE runs.

A good chunk of the books have not only been re-printed with the new  (fixed) binding technique, but they often have new, updated covers as well!

They were doing several things wrong with the binding. They had the wrong glue and/or temperature, they weren't "roughing up the binding" before applying the glue, etc.  I've seen their binding process -- trust me, it works great now! :)

I think you mean, "it worked great just before they closed up the print shop."   :smirk:

Yes, the presses have been sold and all future printings will be done out-of-house as is the way most publishers operate.

  • Ah, good to know.

Everyone I know has probably been buying the pre-1997 (I think that was the date =P) books.

    Oh, well...
