  • #5 Pope Benedict XVI

    Age: 83
    Title: Pope
    Residence: Vatican City
    Country of citizenship: Germany

Highest earthly authority for 1.1 billion souls, or one-sixth of world's population. Staunch traditionalist deplores secularism, consumerism and moral relativism, unbending on birth control, gαy marriage and ordination of female priests. Despite major gaffes (including lifting the excommunication of a h0Ɩ0cαųst-denying Bishop and quoting a 14th-century source that declared the only new things the prophet Mohammed brought were "evil and inhuman"), appears genuinely interested in healing old wounds. In September, not only became the first Pope to visit Westminster Abbey since the Protestant Reformation, but also shook hands with a clergywoman (another first). Widening sɛҳuąƖ abuse scandal could undermine moral authority, but increasingly willing to tackle issue head on: "Forgiveness does not substitute for justice." Stylish: Has brought back traditional red, custom-made "pope shoes" and old-school Ecclesiastical headgear.

  • High-profile people are not the most powerful today. They are merely puppets and are chosen to do their masters' bidding. The latter stay in the shadows and can manipulate billions, contrive wars and establish social trends. Those who now control Rome chose well with Ratzinger who knows how to please and beguile so many. Such popularity formed from both conservative and liberal elements makes for stability while the real underlying work is being carried out. Rehashed traditional touches are just as appealing to the clueless masses as calls for change.

Wessex, you are very wise.  Even our Commander in Chief in this land of the "free" and the home of the "brave" is a puppet for someone somewhere.

  • Yes, why do so many lawyers go into politics? Not to improve the lot of humble people. They are trained and chosen to represent vested interests during those charades called elections. What is required is the gift of the gab, an ability to think on the spot and have no scruples about changing direction when instructed to do so.
