CM goes way over the top by saying all those would be damned for following Benedict XV, if Benedict XV were an anti-Pope.  I've asked him if he believes those who followed the wrong "Pope" in the Schism were damned, and he is shifty, but from what I've gathered he thinks some of them were in invincible ignorance but that that won't save them.  So the answer is yes, they are damned.

The underlined part is a complete misrepresentation.  Why would I bring up invincible ignorance if I felt that such people were necessarily damned?

I have clearly and in diverse places said that such people if they were free from the subjective guilt of all mortal sin, but were subject to antipope Benedict XV, without having ANY WAY of knowing he was a heretic, THEY COULD INDEED BE SAVED, since God would not impute to them the sin of schism.

That is the only consistent position, to hold which does not contradict the teachings of the popes.

Matthew, sorry, but I would have replied in the correct section if I had the means.

  • That was the impression I got from your article.  If I misrepresented you, I apologize.  But can you explain the following?

Are you saying that a confessor who followed Benedict XV would not be able to absolve sins?  And if that is true, are you saying that the sins wouldn't be absolved by God Himself in certain cases via perfect contrition?
Readers: Please IGNORE all my postings here. I was a recent convert and fell into errors, even heresy for which hopefully my ignorance excuses. These include rejecting the "rhythm method," rejecting the idea of "implicit faith," and being brieflfy quasi-Jansenist. I also posted occasions of sins and links to occasions of sin, not understanding the concept much at the time, so do not follow my links.
