  • If a picture or a piece of cloth or some other religious article is held up before a first class relic, does it become a third class relic? Some purveyors of relics say so. For example, the Tilma of OL of Guadalupe is encased in a frame which is place high on the wall out of the reach of people. It cannot be touched. But one could hold up an object before it -  would this then become a relic?

  • I have been told the article you want to be a third class relic needs to be either
touched to the first class relic, or touched to the case that enshrines it, with
the intention of touching the 1st class relic and getting as close as possible.

So in the case of the Image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, it would be better to
desire it, and to hold up your article as close as you can get, with the intention
in faith of having a third class relic, but whether it actually becomes one or not
is another thing.  Maybe if your intention is pure, it will be effective.  For example,
if you are afraid to do it because someone will ridicule you, your intention is not
as pure as someone who does it anyway, even while being laughed at, because
their intention is pure and having a third class relic is more important to them,
than is the approval of heretics or Freemasons who have no faith.

I showed a nice holy card with Our Lady's picture on it, the Virgin of Guadalupe,
to a young woman who was working in a Mexican food drive-thru window.  She
held the card, and smiled, and then she let a co-worker look at it from over her
shoulder.  He sneered, and said, "Tschk! EEehhh!" making no words but just
whiny noises of derision.  But that didn't stop the girl from telling me "Thank you."

She was blessed and he was not blessed.  In fact, he may have been cursed, but
that isn't up to me to say.  It could have a lot to do with who is praying for him,
as well, that is, if anyone is.  The Freemasons and Protestants have made
serious inroads in Mexico and all of Latin America.

I recommend keeping some holy cards on hand so when you get the incentive
to share one you can give one away.  People need to be reminded.  It is especially
good for panhandlers who ask for money.  They may have nothing beautiful to
look at, and one card like that could be the thing that makes them want to say
their prayers every day.  And that could lead to their eternal salvation!

Thanks! And may Our Blessed Mother of Guadalupe bless us all here at Cathinfo!

I don't think so. To make a third class relic, the article needs to be touched to a first class relic.
