Title: Purgatory
Post by: Phyllo on March 26, 2011, 02:57:39 PM
Hi,
I was listening to Michael Voris at realCatholictv.com and he was talking about purgatory.  Now I know that once you die there is nothing that you can do about your spiritual well being.  Whatever was done here is all you get.  He talked about praying for the souls in purgatory for this very reason: because they cannot pray for themselves.  He then said that the souls in purgatory can pray for us.

If they cannot pray for themselvs, how can they pray for us?If they can pray for us, how do we know this?

Do we take it on faith or Tradation?  I was just wondering.
Any thoughts will be welcome

Thanks

Besides Church teaching, we also have a body of evidence from the Lives of the Saints.

Those in Purgatory are fixed in their love of God; they are saved. So they have charity. Even if they could pray for others, it makes sense that they wouldn't be able to shorten their own time in Purgatory. After all, once you enter Purgatory, your one goal is to get out!

I think it's in the realm of theological opinion.

At any rate, we know by the doctrine of Communion of Saints that the souls in Heaven can and do pray for us.

A soul in Purgatory is a future soul in Heaven.

So even if they can't pray for us yet, they will.

Welcome Phyllo, just wanted to add this simple devotion, kissing your Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, just kissing the Brown Scapular imparts to you 500 days indulgence each time, you can offer the indulgence to the Holy Souls.
My thoughts are if we offer them our indulgences and prayers while we are living, they in turn will help us in our need, both temporal and spiritual.  Especially when they do arrive in Heaven.

Thank you for the welcome.
I pray for the souls in purgatory every day when I pray the rosary.  I know I need their prayers.
