By all means, go into the tent meeting and challenge the Protestant "theologian," but before you do, make sure you can quote chapter and verse better than him (or her).  Protestants are indeed largely ignorant of history, believing whatever they've been told by the experts of their particular denomination.  Why?  Because of the same reason most Catholics give, "obedience."  It never occurs to Lutherans, for example, that Luther might have been a bad guy, or to Pres-buy-terians that  there was a reason John Knox was burned at the stake. Lay-Lutherans don't read Luther; lay-Presbies haven't read Knox.  You'll convince no one by refuting writings of which they've heard about small portions.  If you study the Bible only, and have been raised in a sect, you can interpret it in only one manner.  Don't get mad and resort to name-calling.  No Protestant was ever converted that way.  Pray to the Holy Ghost to take the spiritual blinders off their hearts and minds.  And again, make certain you can out-quote the "evangelist" or you'll only end up strengthening him/her in heresy. Most Catholic lay-folk are not intimately familiar with the Bible as an entire Book, hence Protestants dismiss them and the Catholic Faith as superstition for the blind, ignorant populace. …

It's sad that this excellent, fact-filled comment has drawn only two up thumbs (one of 'em mine). It makes many of the other comments, with their childish and un-Catholic sneering at ordinary Protestant people—a very large proportion of whom are sincere in their misdirection and blindness and for whom we should be praying and to whom we should be giving better example than most of us (me included) do—look deservedly sickly and pale.

Sincere? How is denigrating and insulting the Blessed Virgin Mary, THE MOTHER OF JESUS, and all the Saints for that matter, and calling all Catholics idolaters, being sincere? Can you be wilfully ignorant and negilgent and be sincere at the same time?

Do you have any Protestant family members?

For what you say to be true, you would have to say you are talking about invincibly ignorant Protestants, at least.

    But do such even exist?

By definition they all oppose the Catholic Church and call Her the Whore of Babylon.

Can you give me an example of an "ordinarily Protestant person who is sincere"?

And good job making a straw man - asserting that I or anyone else doesn't pray for them, concluding that we are sickly and pale, uncharitable individuals who don't wish their conversion.

  • Every single Protestant i have ever encountered is arrogant and bad willed, and this even in third world countries, where you would think they would be more "simple" - they're not, the more ignorant the worse i would say.

All these "ordinarily sincere" Protestants i have encountered say "I ain't going to go confess my sins to no man, what kind of thing is that!?" "Holy only God!"

There was an ordinary professor who is all smiles and is "good" and "honest" in the eyes of the world and when i proceeded to tell her that the Catholic Church is the only real one and Protestantism is false and man-made, that false smile quickly went away and she says she will not discuss her religion with anyone and doesn't want to hear one thing.

When you show how the Bible refutes what they believe all they can do is mindlessly retort "The Bible and the Bible only". I had a maid who was like that.

    How sincere right?

Vinikias, apparently, you have met only obnoxious, vehemently anti-Catholic Protestants, or you, yourself, have approached them in a similar manner, forcing them to fight back.  Do ALL non-Catholics act similarly, in your experience?  If so, the problem is your lack of charity.  If not, may I suggest you steer clear of Protestants because it sounds as if your attitude drives them further into heresy and hatred of the True Faith.  Your words are not becoming a Catholic.
Yes, I have a few Protestant relatives, who are better described as functional agnostics.  I work with Protestants, and was one myself, so I do believe I'm qualified to correct you.  At present, three of my work colleagues are seriously investigating several truths of Catholicism that are generally rejected by Protestants.  (Devotion to BVM, the Saints, the Catholic Church as source of the Bible)   It IS ignorance, not so much invincible, as never considered because no Catholic cared enough to say anything.  Please check out Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer's sermon given on August 25 in Danbury, Connecticut.  It is still on YouTube or available on CathInfo as mp3.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • As a protestant convert, I can tell you 90% of it is pure and simple ignorance.  I mean when I think back to when I was a protestant only a couple of years ago, I am astonished at how utterly ignorant I was. I mean the most basic things, I had never even heard the word sacrament (let alone that there are seven of them!), where and how we got Sacred Scripture (or that I was missing 7 books) and indeed the entirety of Church history from end of Acts to Luther's revolt was a complete blank.  It was only after I thought about it and decided to do some reading about Church history that I encountered the Catholic Church, the early Church Fathers/doctors etc.  I literally knew nothing about the Catholic Church, other than they are pretty big, kind of everywhere and was always told they are a big meanie-pants or something.  To give just one example, I was trying to explain the real presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to a protestant family member, here was the response " Jesus already lives in my heart so why would I need something like that..."   Ya, this is what you are dealing with folks, just keep that in mind if you are talking with protestants.

Seriously folks, never, ever underestimate the ignorance of the average pew-warming protestant about who and what the Catholic Church is!!  They know waaaaaaay less about Holy Church than we typically know about their sects (and history in general) and the little they might know is heavily infected with bad anti-Catholic propaganda that the Church probably refuted centuries ago.

I believe Cardinal Newman was already quoted, but one more time, "To read history is to cease to be protestant" Is absolutely correct.

And yes, basically protestants just read their Bible, think about what it means to them, and form a personal religion around that. If the sect they are currently attending starts to stray too far away from their interpretations of Scripture then they either go down the street to a more appealing one, or form a new sect. Religion buffet style. It is admittedly pretty much tailor made for 'modern' man.  Plus they have rock bands and laser light shows at their services, well at least the 'cool' hipster prottie churches do.

Why do people here ASSUME i talk badly to non-Catholics? Or provoke them? Or that i am mean and uncharitable in person? Do you know me? Do you know this? How could you?

That's rash judgment right there, a SIN.

And, YES, 99% of all non-Catholics i have met, even novus ordos, are bad willed.

They all seem "nice" and your typical "good person", but start asking them about religion, even POLITELY, and shazam, they show their true colors.

They just cannot believe they are actually NOT good persons, or that they are wrong, or that they are actually on the road to Hell.

Sugar-coating and telling them half-truths are not the way to go, so Saints and Catholics of repute say.

How are you going to sugar-coat the fact that they are on the road to Hell? How will you tell that "nicely" to them? Are you placing human respect above the truth?

So far, only 3 non-Catholics have been "receptive", in that they "heard me out" and didn't reject the truth from the start, but still, they are still non-Catholics and don't really seem to think things are for real and that they are outside the Church.

    They think it's a game.

I have given up hope telling them anything else because like i said, they don't seem to care and keep committing the same sins, so now it's up to prayer and for God to deliver them, if it is His will.

Ouch, hit some nerves did we?

How about you actually address anything i said, instead of engaging in useless ad hominems?

You say i make a fool out of myself and that i don't even read what i write. How so?

Anyways, you missed the mark completely, for, since i signed up here, there have been full DAYS where i didn't make a single post.

How dare you speak about charity here? You seem some stuck-up arrogant prick who feels he can put people down on an internet forum.

The brick dried but what i was going to write instead was that you come off as an arrogant stuck-up prick who can't even take any criticism, and instead of answering anything with substance, you just engage in childish rants.

Perhaps because you talk so badly to us Catholics.

Rather, you hit some taste buds.

To put the matter in the sort of one- and two-syllable words you'll have a chance of understanding, you are a vulgar, foul-mouthed, badly spoiled lout and as big a fool as has ever blighted this site. In your average of five posts a day, you have yet to say a single genuinely original or thoughtful thing—barely even a civil one. Should the day ever come that you do, you will be addressed in a manner befitting an adult.

Five will get you ten that I don't live so long.

Just what kind of a sissy are you anyways? Nuancing and nagging about post numbers and averages? Launching puerile and trite adjectives, like a coward or an ignorant does when he can't give an actual answer? Are you a man or a woman?

I surely hope you're a woman, for i can't stand it when real, actual men engage in such effeminate sophistry.

Give an actual, real answer to anything i have said or keep reading Little Women or Pride and Prejudice.

It is most interesting that the now-banned Vinikias—he was the wolf Cathedra in jackal's clothing—would imply that there's more than one kind of sissy! Could he be unwittingly revealing something about what lies behind his own endless bluster and pseudo-"manly" bravado? Could it be that he's just back from a Sissies Anonymous meeting? How long, I wonder, has he been sissy-free?
