Our erstwhile Cardinal, Roger Mahony (now retired) pulled a doozy on the archdiocese of Los Angeles before he packed up and moved to North Hollywood (St. Charles Borromeo parish). He instituted the bizarre innovation of having the people in the vestibule come up the aisle for Communion first, followed by the people in the back pews, and gradually working their way pew by pew toward the front rows of the church.
    .
    Why? one might wonder.
    .
His explanation of this change is, "As Our Lord said, for the first shall be last and the last shall be first."
    .
You can't make this stuff up.

  • Two things:
     (1) Anyone care to comment on split infinitives?  I don't like them at all. But I forgive it in one instance only: "To boldly go where no man has gone before." Sad to say it but it works here! Say it correctly and Star Trek just wouldn't be the same. :)

     (2) When I set my home alarm the automated voice informs me that the "pin is excepted" instead of "accepted". I yell at it most every time.

  • Having spent several years teaching grammar for a living, I had better not be surprised by any of these gems, but as I get older, I find myself more and more befogged by brain gas. When this happens, I tend to make "typos" that have nothing to do with a lack of knowledge. The answer: re-check, and re-check again, then  consult an established reference, if still in doubt.

The "nip it in the..." example was amusing. I've never heard that one before.

The problem is that change in the language has been around forever, but when ignorant people use this as an excuse to spend their lives protesting that the changes are equally good, and that we should allow them without even a blink, they are wrong.

Also, be aware of grammar that tends to be political correctness in disguise. The agreement of the pronoun with a prior subject worked perfectly fine when it was customary to use a masculine singular with a preceding singular subject until feminists demanded it be "him or her" and certainly got ugly when changed to a plural pronoun.

"...to go boldly..." does sound better to me. Rather Shakespearean. You are just used to hearing it the other way.

  • Child asks mother:  "Can we do the witch's dance?"
Mother:  "What do you mean, witch's dance?"
Child:  You know, when we say, "And to the republic, for witch's dance, one nation, under God."
