A Roman Catholic diocese in Kenya has suspended a parish priest for rapping during Mass sermons, the BBC reported Monday.
The suspension bars Father Paul "Sweet Paul" Ogalo from saying Mass in public or administering Holy Communion for a year.
The sacred and the secular could not mix, Bishop Philip Anyolo of the Homa Bay Diocese in western Kenya told the BBC.
Anyolo said Ogalo can use rap to preach to young people - just not on the altar.
Last month Ogalo told the BBC that "young people call me 'Sweet Paul' because I rap sweet."
“We have suspended him for a year to give him time to reconsider his ways,” another diocesan official, Father Charles Kochiel, told the Catholic News Service in a report from Kenya Saturday.
Kochiel said Ogalo should have consulted higher-ups to find out if what he was doing was in accordance with church doctrine.
“Ah! Ah! Yeah! Youths enjoy your youth while you are still young. But remember that God is going to judge you for whatever you do … Ah…,” Ogalo would rap as congregants and nuns at St Monica Church in western Kenya swayed to the beat, according to the news service.
“I use the rap music to bring … youths to the church,” Father Ogalo said. “Thereafter, I bring them to Christ.”

  •  :fryingpan:This priest is in the same category as the priest who was suspended for saying mass while riding a hover board.  How either explained himself to his bishop is mystery.  What possible excuse could be given?

While reading about these aberrations might be interesting, it seems to me there are two things to consider:
    .
Firstly, while they might appear to be rare and anomalous aberrations, they might not be all that rare. I say this because I have seen personally several such aberrations that never made it into any news article or online feature, even on Traditio.com.
    .
For example, I saw a priest doing a soft-rap wiggle dance going around the Newchurch altar-table, bobbing his head up and down to the beat of the 3-piece band (including a drum set) located off to the side of the sanctuary, at St. Ferdinand's parish church in San Fernando, CA. San Fernando, King of Spain, was probably turning in his grave.
    .
Secondly, consequent to the suppression of news that would report these aberrations worldwide, much like has been the case with other categories of innovation, the likelihood of these becoming commonplace in the future is INCREASED.
    .
Notice for example, that occurrances of communion-in-the-hand were seemingly rare in the 1950s, after the Newmass erupted like a volcano from hell, it became the norm; in fact, there were priests (like Fr. Frederick Schell in CA) who were severely ostracized for refusing to distribute communion-in-the-hand. Notice also that while Newmass innovation like the Focolare movement was so-called suppressed by some local bishops, along comes the nefarious Francis/Bergoglio, who practically hands out rewards like trick-or-treat candy to practitioners of same. Or the same could be said of keeping Church doctrine clean of heretical influence such as that of Lutheranism, when worldwide there have been bishops who behave as though their "making inroads of reconciliation" with Lutheran heresies is somehow a mark of something commendable.

1st Mansion Tenant, you've done a good thing posting this thread. Thank you.
    .
While I don't consider this "good news" nor do I enjoy reading about it, nonetheless your having posted it is a spiritual work of mercy because you are informing the ignorant and counseling the doubtful.
    .
Sometimes we might not enjoy seeing bad news, but that doesn't make telling the news a bad thing.

    .
I would raise the same question regarding excuses I have heard some bishops give for their own actions.
    .
There are bishops who are known for good things, but unfortunately there are others who are known for evil things.
    .
To be fair, as I recall the hoverboard priest used that antic during his sermon which is technically not part of Mass.
    .
Even so, it is worth noting here that in the article 1st Mansion Tenant posted above, the local bishop is quoted saying,
The suspension bars Father Paul "Sweet Paul" Ogalo from saying Mass in public or administering Holy Communion for a year.
The sacred and the secular could not mix, Bishop Philip Anyolo of the Homa Bay Diocese in western Kenya told the BBC.
Anyolo said Ogalo can use rap to preach to young people - just not on the altar.
    .
So apparently the PRINCIPLE of a priest using "rap" to preach was not opposed, only doing so "on the altar" was the problem.
(Note, perhaps Fr. Ogalo will eventually conclude that so long as he does not stand "on the altar" that he should be able to rap.)
Consequently, this story will serve the purpose of making priests worldwide consider using "rap" to make religion seem more "relevant" to youth. And as more and more priests start doing this, bishops could gradually start adopting the practice as a PRINCIPLE.
    .
For example, a friend told me that when he complained to a Cardinal in Rome some 30 years ago, that innovations were having a destructive effect in his diocese and in other dioceses in America, the Cardinal showed him a world map and pointed to several places worldwide saying that here and there, innovations are resulting in growth of the Church and much optimism for the future.
