  • Do you think this is a good prayer for the family to pray for the US on independence Day. If not explain why and propose alternative prayers

    O God our Creator,
from your provident hand we have received
our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
You have called us as your people and given us
the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God,
    and your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
    to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us
in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart
    to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;
give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
    gathered in your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood
    and every danger overcome—
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
and all who come after us—
this great land will always be "one nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

  • The prayer seems fine to me, but for some reason I am wondering if it was written by a conservative Protestant.  If you have a Traditional Catholic parish your priest may have a Catholic prayer for our country.  In my parish our priest has put a Catholic prayer in our bulletin around July 4th.

Certainly the Rosary is by far the best way to pray for our country.

When I pray for our country I often invoke Our Lady of Guadalupe, the North American Martyrs,  St. Frances Xavier Cabrini and Blessed Elizabeth Seton, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha (or is she still Venerable?) and the others that I can't remember at this time.

  • Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha will be canonized in October.

    St. Andre Bessette
St. Damien of Molokai (Belgian who went to Hawaii, so not North American)
    St. Philip of Jesus
    St. Katherine Drexel
    St. John Neumann
    St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
    St. Isaac Jogues
    St. Francis Cabrini

Some of these saints were canonized after Vatican II though.

  • I would suggest praying Psalm L Miserere, or even the Seven Penitential Psalms, in reparation for the abominations wherewith this nation has coinquinated itself, especially such horrible crimes as the "legal" institutionalization and cultural propaganda of abortion, sins against Sacred Matrimony (such as divorce, ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖity, &c.) and the attacks against the Christian household (such as secularized public "education," the systematic negation of the patria potestas, &c.).

Please ignore all that I have written regarding sedevacantism.

  • Also, an excellent devotion in order to supplicate the mercy and benediction of Our Lord upon the American Republic would be to have recourse to His glorious Mother, the Immaculate Conception, who is the Patroness of the American Republic.

The recitation of the Holy Rosary was already suggested, and this is wonderful.

Another devotion would be the Little Office of the Immaculate Conception.

The text and a commentary upon this illustrious devotion can be found here:

  • Hobbledehoy,
I should've known you'd have some excellent suggetions for us. Thank you.

    Nylndech,
Thanks for filling in the list of saints of North America.  I knew most, but I had to look up St. Philip of Jesus.  What an amazing story.

For anyone who doesn't know about this saint, read about him here:

  • I think the best prayer would be the Rosary.  After that, fall on your face and beg God for His Mercy for this rotten country of ours.  How could we possibly deserve any blessings from Our Creator when our countrymen sanction the murdering of our unborn children and sodomy?  Best to pray, in my opinion, that we don't end up a pile of ash like Sodom and Gomorrah.

give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith
. in our efforts to bring all men to You, O Lord, in hope that their souls may merit Heaven.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
    gathered in your Church

become a nation with You, as her Supreme Leader, fearing in Your Divine Judgment and hoping in Your Divine Mercy.

Grant us, O Lord, a true devotion to Your Blessed Mother, whom You gave us, in Your Divine Mercy.  Pray that we rely on Her Sweet Comfort and rest in Her Immaculate Heart.  Help us, Lord Jesus, to rely on Her Compassion and Your Mercy in these dark times.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

I do not think this is a good prayer for a Catholic to pray because it is Protestant.  I made corrections which are in bold.

It is filled with silliness and error.

How on earth and in good faith can we ask Our Lord for things it is not within his Divine Nature to give us?

Because Our Lord created us, we owe everything to Him.  We are OBLIGATED to belong to Him and His Church.  He can not possibly give us "religious liberty" because this would mean that he is giving "permission" for His creatures to reject Him and go to Hell.  He cannot do this.  Of course, we have free will and we can choose, of our own accord, to accept or reject Him.  But what kind of Catholic would pray for other souls to go to Hell intentionally?

As Catholics, we should also implore the aid of Our Blessed Mother.  How could we not?  And why would we attempt to appease the Protestants by denying that  Our Blessed Mother has anything to do with us?

Of course, I am no writer, but now I think this is a prayer a Catholic could say.

Ultimately though, I still believe we should ask for Our Lord's Mercy for this rotten nation and pray that we survive His coming Chastisement.

Religious Liberty is a multi-time condemned error. We must never adopt the language of the enemy. Rather we need to proclaim that The Church is and must be free because it is the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Faith founded by our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

I wish American Catholics would stop wrapping themselves in the flag and treating the Constitution like it is Scripture.

    Error has no rights.

Prayers of reparation for the sins of abortion, rampant sodomy and religious indifference are more in order. God Bless America indeed.

  • The prayer seems fine.  However, I have a viscerally negative reaction to the phrase, "God our Creator", not because He isn't our creator but becasue that phrase is often used to avoid saying, "God our Father."
