  • In Revelation (Apocalypse) the churches Christ founded are being critiqued as to how well they are adhering to Christ and His laws.. (commandments) and in one part a church is praised for its poverty

    Well, there you go

    need I say more?

Also, Jesus said that unless you give all to follow Him you cannot be His disciple

    Lk 14:33

    Apocalypse 2:9

  • Here are the quotes you refer to:

Luke 14 [33] So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.

Rev 2 [9] I know thy tribulation and thy poverty, but thou art rich: and thou art blasphemed by them that say they are Jєωs and are not, but are the ѕуηαgσgυє of Satan.

Now you do not see here Jesus saying  that poverty is either a good thing or a bad thing. You are reading into this more than is there. You need to read the whole chapter in toto and will see that the recurring themes here are encouragement, admonition and calls for repentance and for the members of each church to do penance.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

By "the poor in spirit" is meant those who are poor in earthly desires, and desire nothing but God. These are poor in desires, but not without affection, because they live contented even in this life; and, therefore, the Lord does not say, "Theirs will be the kingdom of heaven," but "theirs is," because even in this life they are rich in spiritual blessings which they receive from God; and thus, however poor they are in temporal goods, they live content with their condition.

They are different from the rich in earthly desires, who, in the present life, whatever riches they possess, are always poor, and live discontented; for the good things of this life do not satisfy our thirst, however much they are increased; wherefore, these persons are never contented, never attaining to the acquisition of what they desire.'

    St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

Poverty is one of the three Evangelical Counsels.
    Sincerely,

  • Here is a story about a rich man, graceseeker. He has many other projects on top of the one mentioned here. Of course, he's not only rich; he's innovative, just, generous, humble, prayerful. Enjoy!

I have read the entire Bible, several times, heard it at Mass and etc
    how's that for context?
and I s tand by what I said. It is the world (flesh/devil) who says poverty is bad
who says Get all you can in THIS life and forget about the Next

  • Snip of a prayer taken from: Trustful surrender to Divine Providence:

"Either free me from poverty, or make it so pleasant for me that I would not exchange it for all of the wealth in the world."
"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

Thank you for sharing! That is so edifying. What an example.

"And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more."

I think that some people are meant to have money, it is a necessity. But material wealth is the same as spiritual wealth in the sense that it is only given to you so that you can pass it to the less fortunate. It isn't really yours. It's God's. Just like any other good or talent or ability He gives us, it is meant for the good of the whole. I think there is a difference between people who are RICH, having kept much of their earnings to secure their own comforts and luxuries; and those who make money but give most of it away, leaving themselves still living a modest life. One can either give it away directly, or use it to create jobs for others, or both. Either way, it is possible to make a good living yet still remain poor personally, though it is difficult because of the herculean will power and self-denial required.

People to whom God's Providence entrusts more are under grave obligations to use it wisely. Remembering that and the scrutiny they will face on judgment day makes it much, much easier not to be envious. It should also light a fire under the rich to pray a whole lot for guidance on how to use it properly.

  • Trustful Surrender is one of the books that has done the most good which I've ever read. It is truly priceless.

There's nothing like a good walk!

    Psalm 22

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in paths of righteousness for his name sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • "The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear with hearing."

    Thomas a' Kempis

    M
    Quote
Luke 14 [33] So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.
    Mightwish to also:

    1. Note "... So likewise..."
    2. Ask:
     1. "What does  this '... you...' mean?"
      1. Translation check.
     2. "What has the Church said?"

Not that poverty can't be or often isn't an aid, simple observation and / or a bit of reflection should tell anyone that's been around "a minute" that it isn't necessarily good across the board.

Me personally? The less stuff that I have, the less distractions that I suffer.

Conversely, poverty can often be an exercise in 24/7 survival, comfort seeking and / or criminality.
    "Lord, have mercy".

    or as the Word says
What do you have that you have not been given? And if it has been given, why do you glory in it, as though it were not given?
(I think that's the Douay Rheims version, not sure where psg is)
I have noticed that people who have a lot, well, not generalizing and saying all or most but a lot of them that own nice houses act like even the sidewalk and the parking spaces outside their homes (for the entire block) belong to THEM
If money makes you like that, who needs it?
